Carl Gaertner Ohio, (1898-1952) Miller's Hill, 1943 casein on masonite Signed and dated lower right. Signed, dated, and titled verso. Exhibited: Cleveland Museum of Art, 25th Annual May Show, 1943 Biography from the Archives of askART: The following biography is from Christine Fowler Shearer, Arts Administrator, Massillon Museum, Massillon, Ohio. She is the former Director of the Cleveland Artists Foundation, which has two paintings by Carl Gaertner in the collection. Carl Gaertner was born in Cleveland on April 18, 1898. He graduated from East Technical high school in 1918 and attended Western Reserve College. In high school he studied mechanical design, but by his senior year had decided to make painting his primary avocation. From 1920 to 1923 he studied at the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art) with Henry Keller. In 1922, he entered his first May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art and won second prize for an industrial oil painting. From 1925 until 1952, he taught studio classes at the Cleveland School of Art and occasional classes at John Carroll University, Western Reserve University and the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute. The reflective eye of Gaertner chronicled three decades of Cleveland and its people. It is all there: the growing might of industrial Cleveland; the mass-produced promise of the assembly line, giving way to a dawning awareness of lost freedom, and the surrender of individuality; the love affair of Americans with nature and the ideals of Thoreau and Whitman and Frost; and the conflict between that love affair and the industrial promise. Gaertners subject matter was always drawn from the world around him. Early in his career, he focused on Cleveland and its environs. This interest never left him, but as he matured, his choice of subjects broadened. He painted watercolors and oils of Bermuda in the mid 1920s and began making frequent trips to Provincetown in 1926. Like other Cleveland artists, he culled inspiration from travels within the United States, notably trips to Pittsburgh and Cambridge Springs in Pennsylvania, to the mountains of West Virginia, and to Cape Cod. From the mid 1940s until his death, he also produced paintings based on sketches made during train rides to visit galleries in New York City. At the time of his premature death in 1952, Carl Gaertner enjoyed a considerable reputation as a master of American Scene painting. By the 1940s, Gaertner was represented by the Macbeth Gallery in New York City and his paintings were exhibited in shows throughout the United States. In 1944 and 1952, Gaertner received the National Academy of Designs highest award for individual work in a group exhibition. Prestigious institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, had begun acquiring his paintings. But since the artists sudden death from a brain hemorrhage at age 54, his reputation has fallen into relative obscurity.

Carl Frederick Gaertner (American, 1898-1952) Industrial Cleveland (Blue) Oil on canvas 30 x 35 inches (76.2 x 88.9 cm) Signed lower right: Carl Gaertner PROPERTY OF A CALIFORNIA FAMILY A fascinating aspect of the two paintings by Carl Gaertner in the present auction is how they relate to one another compositionally, but are painted in diametrically contrasting palettes. The red/green version of Industrial Cleveland (lot 68113) is more extensive as well as more directly painted than this blue/yellow version, which seems to have been somewhat edited, simplified, and more thickly painted. Gaertner may have intended these two works to show the industrial complex at different times of day, similar to the way Monet painted versions of the same cathedral and haystacks. The subject would alter dramatically in terms of color depending upon light and weather conditions. It is notable that both scenes are blanketed in snow, which would accentuate reflected color. Was this the artist's intention behind painting the scene with two different color palettes? Or perhaps it is something else entirely? A compelling idea about Carl Gaertner once advanced by the great Cleveland industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost, who knew Gaertner personally, was that Gaertner might have been colorblind. Most colorblind men tend to have the red-green variety of colorblindness, which impedes their ability to distinguish between types of greens and reds, but enables them to see blues and yellows with great intensity. It is intriguing to speculate that Industrial Cleveland (Red) was Gaertner's first version, one in which he explored the tonal relationships of his subject before painting the present work, in radiant blues and yellows. Whatever the reason for painting two near-versions of a similar scene, Gaertner created the same feeling in both: a tremendous fondness for the muscular architecture of Cleveland. HID04901242017

Carl Frederick Gaertner (American, 1898-1952) Industrial Cleveland (Red), 1930 Oil on canvas 35 x 41 inches (88.9 x 104.1 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Carl Gaertner / 1930 PROPERTY OF A CALIFORNIA FAMILY Carl Frederick Gaertner was the most celebrated artist of the Cleveland School to paint heroic industrial landscapes during the 1920s. His scenes of titanic steel mills and blast furnaces along the snaking Cuyahoga River in his native Cleveland, Ohio, and similar subjects he recorded in nearby Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, earned him virtually every artistic award Cleveland could heap upon him. Before long, his reputation stretched far beyond Cleveland as he won widespread national recognition for his portrayals of the poetry and power of the rust belt's mammoth steel industry and the teeming chaos needed to service it: bridges, barges, and a vast network of railroads. His work caught the attention of Macbeth Gallery, the first New York gallery to represent American art exclusively, and which became his exclusive dealer. Macbeth mounted solo show after solo show for the artist until his untimely death at age 54. The two industrial landscapes by Carl Gaertner in the present auction represent a significant rediscovery. Their whereabouts have been unknown since 1930, when one (Industrial Cleveland (Red)) appeared in the list of works the artist submitted to the Cleveland Museum of Art's 1930 "Twelfth Annual Exhibition of Work by Cleveland Artists and Craftsmen." The father of the present owner acquired both works in Cleveland around 1930, while he was living there, and perhaps purchased them directly from the artist prior to his representation by Macbeth Gallery.
