Literature Michael Stevenson and the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Tresses and Other Recent Projects, (Johannesburg, 2007), illustrated. Voortrekker Monument belongs to the artist's Tresses series, in which he recreates iconic architecture in the form of braided hair sculptures. The project originated in 2006 when Gaba undertook a research trip to South Africa. Travelling around Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria, he selected ten buildings to work with, photographing them and making sketches. On returning to his studio in Cotonou, Benin, he reconstructed the buildings from artificial hair. The present lot depicts the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. These 'wig buildings' were the subject of his first solo exhibition in South Africa at the Michael Stevenson Gallery in Johannesburg. Other buildings to receive his attention were the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town and the Sentech Tower in Johannesburg. Kitsch and easily identifiable, the hair sculptures wryly critique the increasing consumerism of the tourist industry. The artist suggests that whilst technological advances have made international travel more accessible, it has also trivialised the experience. For Gaba, the wheelbarrow is an object of symbolic importance. In 2014, the artist exhibited a wall-mounted coin bank in the shape of a stylised barrow entitled Bankivi: Workers' Bank at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, USA. The title of the work emphasizes that this is a savings account, not a donations box. It communicates Gaba's belief that individual contribution and collective investment are of greater benefit to the developing world than isolated acts of charity. The present lot has been wrapped in decommissioned Central African franc banknotes; a stark visual reminder that the current institutions need reform. The global economy and economic exchange between Africa and the West has preoccupied Gaba since the late 1990's. Born in Cotonou, Benin, but raised in the Netherlands, the artist has a foot in both camps. His dual identity caused him to question the the relationship between the 'first' and 'third' world, and consider how the existing systems might be restructured. The wheelbarrow 'banks' encourage us to engage with the problem of Africa's struggling economies at a personal level. In choosing to deposit a coin, the visitor is indicating their support for international collaboration. Since completing his studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Meschac Gaba has exhibited at numerous international fairs such as the 50th Venice Biennial in 2003 and Documenta 11 in 2002. Tate Modern in London acquired a major installation in 2013, entitled Museum of Contemporary African Art. He is now a household name across the world.

Koran man's bicycle Sweden/Germany, 2012 Meschac Gaba (b. 1961) - African artist Fitted with the registration plate 'EM 991' on the rear mudguard Overall length: 189 cm; height of the handlebars: 115 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Original documenta bicycle that was part of a popular art project at the eleventh edition of the world art show; the bicycles originally derived from the Swedish army The present gold lacquered bicycle originally belonged to a bicycle rental that was part of an art project initiated by the documenta 11 participant Meschac Gaba. The idea was that the visitors were encouraged to rent a bike for a small amount of money, in order to use it for their exhibition tour. Meschac Gaba additionally established a library and a museum shop, which should also contribute to his approach of an imaginary 'Museum of Contemporary African Art'. In essence, these actions were intended to express the artist's critical attitude towards the Western museum concept, according to which museums are often used as instruments of power and domination regarding the definition and proclamation of cultural and economic values. The bicycle is fitted with the characteristic plate 'HUMANIST SPACE. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART IN KASSEL' at the top tube. The rear mudguard is equipped with the typical registration plate 'EM 991'. The bicycle features a back pedal brake, a dynamo lighting and a bell. The piece is in very good overall condition with only light traces of age and wear. There is a small dip at the lower end of the front mudguard and the bicycle fork is slightly scratchy. The bell as well as the head tube show a few rust spots. The height of the handlebars is 115 cm and the height of the bicycle rack is 77.5 cm. The overall length of the bike is 189 cm. Meschac Gaba (b. 1961) Meschac Gaba, actually Ekué Woekedje Meschac Gaba, was born in Benin and began his artistic career as an self-taught artist. A foundation enabled him in 1990 to travel to France, which was followed by further stays in Senegal and the Ivory Coast. In 1996, the artist was finally admitted to study at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Since the late 1990s Gaba's works have been presented to an international audience; his most significant exhibitions include the documenta 11 in Kassel and the 50th Biennale in Venice. In his works, the artist especially focuses on Africa and examines socio-political issues such colonialism and globalization.
