    Est: £400 - £600

Pen and ink Signed with initials, lower right, titled and signed, to lower mount 12 x 12.5cm (4 3/4 x 4 7/8in.) Henry (Harry) Furniss (March 26, 1854 - January 14, 1925) was an artist and illustrator, born in Wexford, Ireland. He worked for The Illustrated London News, The Graphic, Punch. He illustrated Lewis Carroll's novel Sylvie and Bruno in 1889 and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded in 1893. His two-volume autobiography, titled The Confessions of a Caricaturist was published in 1902, "The famous collars I 'invented' for grotesque effect, but I always saw Mr. Gladstone without them, for to me his head has never been, as some suppose, a mere block around which to wreathe a fantastic and exaggerated collar" (Confessions I: 163-64). William Ewart Gladstone, FRS, FSS ( 29 December 1809 - 19 May 1898) was a British Liberal politician. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times (1868-74, 1880-85, February-July 1886 and 1892-94), more than any other person, and served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Gladstone was also Britain's oldest Prime Minister; he resigned for the final time when he was 84 years old. Provenance: Property of The Viscount Norwich and Lady Diana Cooper.
