    Aug. 24, 2024

Malcolm Furlow (1946-2023) American, Native American Giclee

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Malcolm Furlow (1946-2023) American, Native American Giclee. Signed lower left. Numbered 36/50 on back. Title on back: "Comanche Rider II." Dated '91 on back. Depicts a colorful scene of a horse rider with weapon drawn.  Size: 50 x 36 1/4 in.  #2379 #9 .  Malcolm Furlow was born in 1946 in Louisiana. His father was half Choctaw, and his grandfather had been taken from a reservation as a boy to a Christian school, where his braids were cut off and he was beaten frequently for speaking his traditional language. As a small child, Malcolm recalled seeing a Native American being hung by a mob in his neighborhood. That night the family moved to Dallas, Texas for safety, and he was instructed by his father to never mention his heritage, nor did he ever meet his Choctaw relatives. While traveling across New Mexico with his father at the age of six he became fascinated with the landscape, and asked him for paint and brushes, switching to acrylics soon after to capture the colors he preferred. By the time he graduated high school he was creating enormous canvases of landscapes and abstract figures, but while attending the University of Texas on a track-and-field scholarship his art professor disapproved of his style, and he dropped out of college to focus on music instead. In 1964 he joined a band called Johnny G and the G-Men, playing saxophone and bass guitar, both of which he taught himself to play. For the next eighteen years he bounced around the Pacific Coast and the Southwest, getting married at least twice (and divorced at least twice), interacting with the mafia in Las Vegas, and playing backup for people like Lou Rawls and the Beach Boys. After an accident in Burbank on a motorcycle in 1982 left him stranded with broken instruments, he answered a newspaper solicitation from Disney Studios and met John Olson, a lead Imagineer who hired him to help craft sets and models for films. Olson also introduced Furlow to model trains, which became his primary focus for the next decade, traveling all over the world to set up large-scale tracks for movies, museums, and private collections. While experimenting with photography in 1987 he suffered a near death experience that invoked a spiritual awakening and eventually led him to return to painting, setting up a permanent studio in Taos, New Mexico. By the 2000s he was internationally recognized for his vibrant, colorful, Wild West-themed works, naming Fritz Scholder, Andy Warhol, and Peter Max as the most important influences on his style. He obtained a Silver award from the Sorbonne and the coveted Gold award from the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, with his pieces in museum collections in Sweden, Japan, and throughout the United States. A documentary on his life in 2019 referred to him as “a Renaissance Man: the quintessential cowboy, musician, and intellectual artist.” Tragically, this living legend was sickened early in the pandemic and withdrew from public life, passing away in March 2023 from the effects of long COVID.

Armani Indian Furlow #1688. The pieces in this series are all different colors. Provenance, from the Armani Indian series. Taos resident, Malcolm Furlow, an award-winning painter, hasn’t always been an artist. As a young man he received a track scholarship to the University of Texas and decided to choose art as his major. Unfortunately, his art professor disapproved of his style of painting and a disappointed Furlow left college to become a rock and roll musician. For 18 years he played the sax, bass and sometimes the guitar, playing back up for such notable groups and soloists as the Beach Boys and Lou Rawls. Later, Furlow used his artistic talent to construct models for movie sets at Walt Disney Studios. He also delved into photography, writing a book for Kodak, called Close-Up Photography. In 1987 after hearing scholar Joseph Campbell’s words “Follow Your Bliss,” Furlow decided to go back to his first love, painting. Furlow began drawing American Indians at the age of 6, when his father had Malcolm accompany him on business trips throughout New Mexico. Beginning with watercolors, Furlow realized the medium was ill suited for large canvases and switched to brightly colored acrylic images of Native Americans. About his subject matter and painting style, Furlow has said, “I knew I wanted to say it with color because that’s the emotion of it. I’ve got to make the viewer feel what I feel. All I’m trying to do is paint them as they are – paint their culture, their dignity and their stature. I didn’t want to do portraits of Indians, I wanted to say something about the human condition.” He paints two worlds: the Native American and their place in the Anglo World. In addition, Furlow rides and decorates motorcycles. Provenance: Louis Michael Schultz – An Advertising Man’s Ad Man An ad man of exceptional vision and depth. To say that Lou Schultz had advertising in his blood- would be like saying that Babe Ruth could hit a little. An understatement of a great man, a great ad man who prided himself as a being a great listener who know how to take care of his clients. A dreamer and doer – he rose to the highest echelon of Campbell Ewald in his home town of Detroit – tackling the competitive automotive ad business with the vigor of one those big block V-Eights the town was renowned for back in the day. The following job titles tip the iceberg of this behemoth of ad man- but only tell part of his great story. Staff Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Michigan, 1967-1974, vice president group director, 1975-1977, senior vice president, associate director, 1977-1982, group senior vice president, 1982-1983, executive vice president, 1984-1987, Lintas: United States of America, 1987-1994. Chairman Lintas: World War Media Council, 1991. Member development council IPG, New York City, since 1984. President, Chief Executive Officer Civil Engineering Communications, since 1994. Vice chairman Campbell-Ewald, 1998-1999. Chairman, Chief Executive Officer Initiative Media North America, Los Angeles, since 2000. Chairman Initiative Media World War, 2000. Those are the bullet points. The highlights of a successful life lived at the heights of a life in the competitive world of advertising. They look great on paper. But they merely scratch the surface of this great ad man who took on every challenge as he took on his many clients who trusted him with their good names and products over the years. Bold. Bright. Competitive. A winner. Lou Schultz was the guy you wanted in charge of your ad campaign. And when it came to the media buy – well there was no one finer to ensure that your product would be seen in the brightest and best light. A renegade and a rebel - with a hint of Don Draper and the guts of a riverboat gambler. A straight shooting ad man who always made his client’s money and their products look good.
