    Helene Funke

    Est: €9,000 - €18,000

(1869 Chemnitz - 1957 Wien) "Erster Sonnenstrahl". X" bez.; 46 cm x 64 cm. Rahmen. Provenienz: Aus der Sammlung der Familie von Eugen Knab (1889 -1958), Chemnitz. Oil on canvas. In contrast to the color-intensive paintings safe but delicate lines of the drawing, comparable to Gustav Klimt. Born in Chemnitz, Saxony, the painter Helene Funke received her artistic training in Munich from 1899 onwards at Friedrich Fehr's painting school and with Angelo Jank at the Ladies' Academy. From 1905 to 1913 she lived in Paris and southern France. There she studied Impressionism and French Fauvism. In France she exhibited with Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Maurice de Vlaminck, and her work was represented in the Paris Autumn Salons between 1905 and 1913. Most of her work created in France is unknown to researchers today. From 1913 until her death in 1957, she lived in Vienna, where she soon established herself despite constant hostile criticism from the predominantly male art critics. The depiction of women and girls, regardless of technique, is a theme that occupies an important place in Helen Funke's work, especially between 1907 and 1930. The erotic in Funke's work irritates contemporaries; erotic depictions of women are men's business. In the bending nude, a pencil study, however, the erotic is not in the foreground. The model has placed her right foot on a stool or footstool, which is not even hinted at in the drawing. The surrounding space remains completely undefined. Funke is only interested in the contours of the woman and puts them on paper with a sure stroke. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. Color explosions with high luminosity and great expressiveness comparable to Helene Taussig. Subtle depictions of the human psyche comparable to Egon Schiele. 2007 first museum retrospective at Lentos in Linz, 2019 appreciation of the artist in the exhibition City of Women at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere. In 1913 Helene Funke moved to Vienna, where she lived until her death. Despite the criticism she received from domestic art critics, she presented her work in several exhibitions and was eventually even awarded the Austrian State Prize and the title of professor. In the course of her artistic career, she often had to struggle with discrimination against her male artist colleagues, which is why she became involved in the emancipation movement early on and stood up for equal rights for women. In Vienna, she was a member of the "Vereinigung bildender Künstlerinnen Österreichs" (Association of Women Artists of Austria) and, as a corresponding member from Paris, participated in its first exhibition in 1910. Funke was also represented with thirteen paintings in the second show in 1911 in the Zedlitzhalle, the exhibition house of the Hagenbund. Her modern style, influenced by the Fauves, caused a sensation and was appreciated by fellow Austrian artists as a sign of progress. The depictions of women in Helene Funke's work, which play an essential role in her oeuvre, must be seen against this background. Especially in her portraits she always tried to express the feelings of the sitter. In Girl with Lilies, the artist concentrates the motif in a narrow section of the picture. From the left edge, the girl leans into the picture and, through her hand holding a bunch of lilies, forms the frame of the composition downwards and towards the right edge. No details distract the viewer from the essentials, while the girl is seen smelling the blossoms with her head tilted and her gaze melancholy. [...] Gouache on strong paper, laid down on canvas Munich, 1904 Helene Funke (1869-1957) - German painter and graphic artist Signed, inscribed and dated lower left 'Helene Funke München 04.' Dimensions: 59.5 x 84.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Helene Funke was deeply influence by the French Fauves and has been rediscovered as one of the most important Austrian painters of the interwar period; her works fetch up to €4,300 at international auctions The present gouache is an early work by Helene Funke, who was trained at the Art Academy in Munich. The composition shows a wide lake landscape proving her great technical finesse. At that time, Funke still followed a rather academic style which required a trained eye and high attention to detail. Shortly after the creation of the present work Helene Funke moved to France, where she eventually developed her mature style under the influence of the Fauves. The painting is signed, inscribed and dated lower left 'Helene Funke München 04.'. The paper is minimally discolored and has been laid down on canvas. The edges are slightly torn at the lower and upper right; the damages were professionally restored. The sheet size is 59.5 x 84.5 cm. The frame (including glass) shows clear traces of age and use and measures 64 x 90 cm. Helene Funke (1869-1957) Helene Funke completed her studies at the Academy of Arts in Munich. Her exhibition activities started in 1904 and brought her, for instance, to Berlin and Dresden. Between 1905/06 and 1913 she spent some her time in France, where she was in keen contact with representatives of the Fauves. She became a permanent resident in Vienna in 1913, where she was active in different artists' groups such as the 'Wiener Frauenkunst'. She was awarded the 'Österreichische Staatspreis' in 1928 and exhibited at the Vienna Secession, the 'Künstlerbund Hagen' and the 'Künstlerhaus'.
