Christian Fumagalli Art for Sale and Sold Prices

Christian Fumagalli was born in Gray December 8, 1946. His family moved to Besançon (Doubs) in 1959. He entered the school of Fine Arts of Besançon, in the studio of Jean Ricardon, where he received the After two years of interruption, he obtained the CAFAS in 1970 and the DNSEP in Lyon in 1972.

His friendly encounters with Michel Seuphor in 1966 and Gérard Xuriguera from 1981 are among the highlights of his career.

Also noteworthy, enriching confrontations, at joint exhibitions, with Joan Miró, Antonio Saura, Joseph Beuys, Pablo Picasso ... to name a few.

Fumagalli begins with classical studies: still lifes, where the contribution of geometric abstraction plays an important role; nudes, then self-portraits of which the different pieces have a mechanized aspect, on great bottoms in flat burgundy.


Then come skits and animated landscapes, of a high poetic density, which relate, in a touching way, a story internal to the painting. In the same way that the customs officer Rousseau had invented the landscape portrait, Fumagalli invents the landscape narrative.

There follow works of a more metaphysical character, with the introduction of various elements loaded with symbolism: wall, staircase, stars, lightning ... around characters, standing or lying down.

A decisive turning point in 1975 when he painted a crucifixion accompanied by a small white horse, intended to give the measure of the scene, and who will decide the future of his painting for the next thirty years, with the major theme: horse and characters; including surprising Saint Georges.
