  • LOUIS AGASSIZ FUERTES ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF A ST. BERNARD PREPARED FOR THE BOOK OF DOGS
    Nov. 23, 2024

LOUIS AGASSIZ FUERTES ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF A ST. BERNARD PREPARED FOR THE BOOK OF DOGS

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (1874-1927). St. Bernards. Watercolor and gouache on board. Original watercolor prepared for The Book of Dogs: An Intimate Study of Mankind’s Best Friend. Washington, DC: National Geographic Society, 1919. 16" x 13" board. Fuertes wrote, “The St. Bernard won both his name and his fame in the Swiss Alps, where for many years the monks of the Hospice St. Bernard have used dogs to assist them in saving the lives of travelers lost in the snow. One of these dogs, Barry, saved 40 people and was killed by the 41st, who mistook him for a wolf. But the dogs used by the monks have changed greatly in appearance from time to time. Occasionally an avalanche will destroy a large number, and those remaining will be bred to Newfoundlands, Pyrenean sheep dogs, and others having similar characteristics. Some of the dogs kept at the hospice now resemble powerful foxhounds and would never be admitted to an American bench show in competition with modern St. Bernards, cither smooth or rough coated, such as are pictured on page 51. The old-time working hospice dog had none of the grandeur of this more modern successor to his name, which has been compounded rather recently of several other dogs. Still he is about the most distinct of any of the large dogs, the Newfoundland being the only dog even remotely resembling him. Like all very large heavy dogs, this breed is greatly given to weakness in the legs, cowhocks and weak hips being rather the rule than the exception. The “dewclaw,” or extra hind toe, is also generally present (and was formerly considered desirable). The perfect St. Bernard is a very large, very strong, straight-backed, strong-legged, and heavily organized dog, the colors, as shown, being those most eagerly sought. They may be either rough or smooth in coat. The best American dogs are those of Mr. Jacob Rupert, of Newark, N. J., and Miss C. B. Trask, of California. Indeed, it is doubtful if their dogs are to be surpassed anywhere. The benign St. Bernard should show, in both types, broad, domed, massive head, loose skin, deep-set, rather mournful, eye, haw quite pronounced, and deep-folded flews and dewlap, though he should not be too “throaty.” What is not mentioned in most brief accounts of this dog is the tremendously impressive voice in which he speaks. Probably no other dog has such a deep bass voice, nor such a volume of it. Yet it is as benign and kindly as his expression of countenance, and would tend rather to inspire hope and confidence than fear, even with the timid. The deep personal affection with which St. Bernard owners invariably invest their companions is the best expression of the character of these great, dignified and rather somber dogs, which inspire no fear, even in little children, and which return the stranger’s gaze with a look of calm, steady, and indulgent tolerance, and endure the advances of the unacquainted with a patience and dignity that speak worlds for their gracious and enduring disposition.” Fuertes’ intention was plainly laid out in the introduction to this beautifully illustrated work. Writing, “The dog is a species without known beginning, and of all man’s dependent animals the most variable in size, form, coat, and color.…The illustrator’s problem in preparing this series was not the production of a ‘standard of perfection’ of the various “breeds” of dogs. It was to give, as far as possible, the proper appearance of acceptable types that have been dignified by a name, and to show in what way they are entitled to the friendship and care and companionship of man. Let it not be thought that it was an easy task, nor that had time, opportunity, early concentration, and a larger acquaintance with the field been part of the artist’s equipment, the result would not have been far more satisfactory to the reader and to him… If these pictures it has been less his notion to establish types and a pictorial standard than to show the “man on the street” the general appearance and the special reason for being of the seventy- odd “kinds” of dogs that seemed to the editor and the artist best included in such an exposition as this. There are, of course, other recognized varieties of dogs, but those shown are the kinds best known.” Fuertes relied on readily available titles such as Leighton’s “Book of the Dog” and Watson’s “Dog Book” (first 2 vol. ed.) to “Field and Fancy,’’ and to the illustrated supplements to “Our Dogs,” as well as photographs provided to him from various kennels and helpful men and women known to him. From which he created these charming canine illustrations.

LOUIS AGASSIZ FUERTES AUTOGRAPH & SKETCH FOR WALDO C. MOORE

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (1874-1927). Original sketch of a bird. Pen and ink on bank check. Ca. 1923. 3 1/8” x 8 1/2”. Fuertes was an American ornithological artist, perhaps the best since Audubon. His personal bank check drawn on the Ithaca Trust Company, filled in and signed by him in full to Waldo C. Moore for one cent. Fine, with a small original sketch of a meadowlark or thrush sitting on a fencepost singing. A wonderful example of his work. Waldo Moore was an active autograph collector of the 1920’s who would send celebrities a one cent check of his and ask the person to send one of theirs in return.

    Fuertes Original Watercolor, Dalmatian

    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (American, 1874-1927). "Dalmatian, or Coach Dog". Watercolor and gouache on board. Original watercolor prepared for The Book of Dogs: An Intimate Study of Mankind's Best Friend. Washington, DC: National Geographic Society, 1919. 7 7/8" x 13" board. Fuertes described several dog breeds within the context of their former categorization. Writing here, "The Dalmatian was originally a "pointer" and in his native country was used for sporting purposes. But in England he was found to be very inferior to the native pointer, and, as he showed a marked fondness for horses and stables, he was specially trained as a "coach" or "carriage" dog. For more than a hundred years before the day of the automobile, it was a common thing on English roads to see one of these muscular, deep-lunged, spotted dogs trotting easily between the hind wheels of a fashionable turnoutso close, in fact, that it had the appearance of weaving in and out as the horses heels flew back. The automobile has virtually done away with it as a vehicle guardian and companion; still its unusual appearance has been sufficient to maintain it among the fancy and a goodly number find their way to the big shows. The coach dog strongly resembles a small, straight-legged pointer in general conformation, and differs chiefly in the shorter ear, straight front, and less arched stifle. In color it must be white, evenly spangled all over with round, clearly defined spots of black or dark brown. Black is preferable and more usual. These spots must be sharp, and the more even and uniformly distributed the better. They may be confluent on the ears "it is a virtue to have dark ears" but elsewhere on the body it is a fault. In size they should be from half an inch to an inch in diameter, roughly. The legs should be strong and straight, of good bone, for speed and endurance. The feet should not be large, but compact, and with toes well arched and pads deep and elastic. The coach dog should be from 19 to 23 inches high and weigh from 35 to 50 pounds."

    Louis Agassiz Fuertes "Warblers" Watercolor

    Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Signed along the lower center; with an inscription along the lower right. Further inscribed along the lower left and dated May 1, 1899. Provenance information inscribed along the verso. Provenance: Directly from the artist to Prof. Chas Babcock; gift to Prof. Frederick M. Smith; gift to Ann B. Sampson; Private Collection, Minnesota. Lot Essay: Louis Agassiz Fuertes was an ornithologist, illustrator, and artist and is considered one of the most prolific American bird artists, second only to John James Audubon. Born and raised in New York, he fostered a fascination with birds from a young age. At the age of 17 he became the youngest member ever named when he was inducted as an Associate Member of the American Ornithologists' Union. After studing at the Institute of Keller in Zurich for a year he returned to America to study architecture at Cornell University. However, he lacked a passion for the study of mathematics and geometry and was still fascinated by birds. One apocryphal story tells of him climbing out a window during a college lecture to sit in a tree, completey still, to study a strange bird call. Finally, in 1895, he exhibited fifty of his works at the congress of the American Ornitholgists' Union at Washington and received the first of many commisions for illustrating birds before he graduated. After graduating he studied with Abbott H. Thayer and traveled throughout the United States to study birds. He collaborated with Frank Chapman, the curator of the American Museum of Natural History, on many assignments and even discovered a new species of oriiole with him while in Mexico. His fame led to him returning to Cornell University to lecture on ornithology beginning in 1923. He was killed prematurely by an a train at a crossing near his hometown of Unadilla, New York, when the train was obscured by a load of hay. The paintings in his car extraordinarily survived undamaged.

FUERTES WATERCOLOR OF A FRIGATE BIRD

    Est: $15,000 - $25,000

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (American, 1874-1927). Frigate Bird. Watercolor and pencil on paper. Signed lower right: "Louis Agassiz Fuertes" 30" x 21 3/4" sheet. Louis Agassiz Fuertes was the most widely acclaimed American ornithological artist of his time. Born in Ithaca, New York, Fuertes began drawing birds at an early age, inspired by Audubon’s Birds of America. By the time he was seventeen, his illustrations had qualified him as an associate member of the American Ornithologists’ Union. Fuertes quickly became associated with leading ornithological scientists and artists, and he received professional commissions while still an undergraduate at Cornell. Fuertes went on to produce a vast body of work for an extensive range of projects. His paintings and drawings invariably convey the artist’s meticulous study of his subjects’ form and behavior. His diligence, precision, and skill in draftsmanship produced some of the most animated and engaging bird illustrations of the twentieth century. Fuertes was determined to study and draw birds as they behaved in their natural habitats, unlike his predecessors, including Audubon, who took the easier route of drawing from stuffed specimens. As a result of this scrupulous and sensitive study of living birds, Fuertes’ works are characterized by much greater accuracy and a sense of vitality. Perhaps more than any of the other great bird artists, Fuertes’ birds are always full of life. In the book “A Celebration of Birds: The Life and Art of Louis Agassiz Fuertes,” the noted specialist on ornithological art Roger Tory Peterson notes that even today, “most bird painters are still influenced directly or indirectly by Fuertes...” Fuertes traveled widely to broaden his knowledge of birds and their habitats. In 1899, for example, he accompanied the Harriman Expedition to Alaska, a group that traveled up the coast as far as Plover Bay in Siberia. Sponsored by the railroad and mining magnate Edward Harriman, the elaborately outfitted expedition included well-known scientists such as John Burroughs and John Muir, landscape artists Frederick Dellenbaugh and Robert Swain Gifford, and photographer Edward Curtis. By that time, Fuertes has widely acclaimed himself, his illustrations have been disseminated in several publications. Yet his original watercolors, the most compelling testaments to this great bird artist’s unparalleled abilities, are quite rare.

Biography: Born in New York and inspired as a child by John Audubon's Birds of America, Louis Fuertes became a prominent American ornithologist, illustrator, and artist. His bird paintings and sketches were based on studies in nature and details from fresh specimens across America, Mexico, Colombia, Europe, and Africa. Fuertes was educated at Cornell and went on to illustrate numerous books and articles including for National Geographic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and his three-volume Birds of Massachusetts, and in 1899 he accompanied the Harriman Expedition to Alaska as a biological surveyor. His name is commemorated in two species, including an oriole he helped discover while on a collecting expedition with Frank Chapman, curator of the American Museum of Natural History. Fuertes was killed in a tragic car-train accident at the age of 53. The Wilson Ornithological Society instituted an award in his memory in 1947.
