ANTIQUE AMERICAN OIL PAINTING BY HERMAN FUECHSEL

Hermann Fuechsel, German, American, 1833 to 1915, an oil on canvas painting American Landscape with Waterfall. Circa the late 19th century. Housed in an old richly ornate gilt wood and gesso frame and bears an old paper with information about the artist on the back side. Herman Fuechsel was a German-born landscape painter in New York City and was a member of the Artists Fund Society. He began his formal art studies with landscape painter Hans Heinrich Jurgen Brandes and with landscape painter and engraver Karl Friedrich Lessing at the Dusseldorf Academy. While attending the Academy he would meet American artists Albert Bierstadt, Worthington Whittredge and Emanuel Leutze. He began exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1860 and continued to exhibit there until 1888. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1860 to 1869 and in New York at the National Academy of Design from 1861 to 1900. As a print maker and engraver, Fuechsel produced steel engravings his Hudson River, White Mountain, Lake George, Catskill and Adirondack landscapes. He produced engravings for Albert Bierstadt and several other American landscape painters thus becoming one of the Americas most published artists. One of a kind artwork. Fine and stable craquelure overall. The painting itself is a view from Garrison, toward Newburgh, looking over Constitution Marsh. One can see the Wind Gate of the Hudson, with Storm King on the left of the river and Breakneck on the right. A single steamship can be seen off shore, trudging toward a group of sailboats. In the foreground, a single story, red brick building stands with a high chimney beside it, windows dark. The colors grow more muted as they fall back into the scene, from the rich greens and browns of the trees in the foreground to a pale blue and green of Storm King mountain standing at the very back. The reverse of the frame contains a tag from the Alexander Gallery, providing information on the artist and the painting from its previous collector. Signature: Bottom Right Date of Work: 1875 Frame: Gilt wood and gesso, original Work Size: 14.0x24.0" Frame Size: 26.0x36.0" Weight: 17.6lbs Provenance: Putnam County Estate Condition: Lined, very slightly over cleaned has resulted in some marginal thinness in minor areas of the paint. This resulted in very light glaze-like touch-ups along the sky, numerous tiny dots of inpaint in the sky. Artist Biography: German/AmericanHermann Fuechsel is considered a German/American landscape painter and engraver. He was born in Brunswick (Germany) August 8, 1833 and died December 30, 1915. He began his formal art studies with landscape painter Hans Heinrich Jurgen Brandes (1803-1868) and with landscape painter and engraver Karl Friedrich Lessing (1808-1880) at the Dusseldorf Academy. While attending the Academy he would meet American artists Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910) and Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868). In 1858, Hermann Fuechsel traveled to the United States to join fellow students. Upon arrival in New York City, Fuechsel opened a studio in Appleton's Building at 839 Broadway. In 1882, Fuechsel moved his studio to The Studio Building at 15 Tenth Street where Bierstadt, Whittredge, Gifford and several other artists had their studios. He began exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1860 and continued to exhibit there until 1888. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1860 to 1869 and in New York at the National Academy of Design from 1861-1900. As a print maker and engraver, Fuechsel produced steel engravings his Hudson River, White Mountain, Lake George, Catskill and Adirondack landscapes.
