Joseph Friebert is known for Abstraction, modernist figure, portrait, landscape and still life painting. Joseph Friebert, born in Buffalo, New York, 1908, and died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 2002. He was a major Wisconsin artist, active from the late 1930s until his ?death at age 94. His early style was Social Realist; in the 1950s,? he experimented with abstraction; and from the mid-1960s on, he worked in a very personal, expressionist/lyrical manner, still dealing with subjects related to the human? condition, such as refugees, as well as land-and cityscapes and still lifes. No matter the style in which he was working, he was consistently engaged in transforming into a modern idiom Old Master glazing techniques and the subtle layering of the paint surface.
