Lucian Freud Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1922 - d. 2011

Lucian Michael Freud, OM CH[1] (/fr??d/; 8 December 1922 – 20 July 2011) was a British painter and draughtsman, specialising in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th-century portraitists. He was born in Berlin, the son of Jewish architect Ernst L. Freud and the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Freud got his first name "Lucian" from his mother in memory of the ancient writer Lucian of Samosata. His family moved to England in 1933 to escape the rise of Nazism. From 1942 to 1943 he attended Goldsmiths College, London. He served at sea with the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War.

His early career as a painter was influenced by surrealism, but by the early 1950s his often stark and alienated paintings tended towards realism.[2] Freud was an intensely private and guarded man, and his paintings, completed over a 60-year career, are mostly of friends and family. They are generally sombre and thickly impastoed, often set in unsettling interiors and urban landscapes. The works are noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model. Freud worked from life studies, and was known for asking for extended and punishing sittings from his models.

  • ENGLISH PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER LUCIAN FREUD

ENGLISH PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER LUCIAN FREUD

    Est: $100 - $150

An oil painting on canvas depicting a nude male portrait after the original oil painting on canvas, Naked Man, Back View, 1991 to 1992, by Lucian Michael Freud, English, German, 1922 to 2011. Signed with initials, lower right. Framed. The model for this painting is Leigh Bowery, an Australian performance artist in London and one of Freuds favourite models. Ironically, given that Bowery was renowned for his eccentric dress and passion for make up, Freud painted him here naked, slumped on a low, wide stool in the artists studio. The models fleshy back is almost sculpted by thick layers of paint. This is, in essence, not a traditional portrait but a still life of skin. Lucian Michael Freud was a British painter and draughtsman, specialising in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th century English portraitists. Master of psychological portrait. He was one of the highest paid contemporary artists. Modern and Contemporary English Fine Art, Realist Oil Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.

ENGLISH SELF PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER LUCIAN FREUD

    Est: $100 - $150

An oil painting on canvas depicting a male portrait after the original oil painting on canvas, Man with a Thistle, Self Portrait, 1946, by Lucian Michael Freud, English, German, 1922 to 2011. Framed. The original painting belongs to a series of self-portraits painted by Freud in the 1940s. Freud worked in a realistic, but very emblematic style, genetically linked to the pictorial tradition of the Northern Renaissance masters. In this self portrait, the artist depicted himself looking out the window; in the foreground on a ledge lies a thistle leaf, the aggressive and dynamic shape of which seems to cut the plane of the window sill. That is, with the help of this plant the artist gives the picture a special mood, and also demonstrates his own psychological state.
