    A SCOTTISH FOUR-PANEL OAK AND OIL ON CANVAS SCREEN The paintings by Paul Frenzeny (French, circa 1840-1902), circa 1890 Marks: signed lower right each panel P FRENZENY 82-1/2 x 116 inches (209.6 x 294.6 cm) The hinged four-panel screen with fretted oak framework, the bottom of each panel with carved and applied panel of a deer head and branches, each panel fitted with an oil on canvas painting of Highland stag hunting scenes, backed in red felt. Originally from France, Paul Frenzeny is best known for his illustration work featured in Harper's Weekly during the period of 1869 and 1878. Commissioned by Harper's in 1868 to travel across America, Frenzeny along with Jules Tavernier recorded the landscape and peoples of remote and relatively unexplored areas of the Western and Southwestern United States. Later published work for Harper's featured scenes of California, Nevada, and Central America. In 1894 Frenzeny provided a number of the original illustrations for the first edition publication of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The panels on this screen relate to another set of four smaller panels dated 1891 and also mounted in an oak screen.

    Ambush Scene for "Young People" watercolor and ink on woven paper signed l.r. with printer's instructions on blank margin of work at bottom 11" x 7" A fine illustration, apparently executed for Young People's Magazine, the scene shows a covered wagon train making its way through a mountain pass, and being attacked by marauding Indians. French by birth, Frenzeny immigrated to the U.S. and during the 1870's and 1880's lived for a time in Texas and later San Francisco, executing many similar illustrations for Harper's and Leslie's.
