Appleton / Goupil Origin: New York Demensions: Plate 14 x 9 1/4 " Provenance: Hill House Subject: Portrature Notes & Literature: Son of a distinguished Chicago physician who served as president of Rush Medical College, Frederick Warren Freer was encouraged to take up art after a childhood illness left him partially deaf. His parents took Frederick and his sister Cora to Munich in 1867 to study at the Royal Academy, then a popular art school for Americans. He began sending work to exhibitions at the Chicago Academy of Design (predecessor of the Art Institute of Chicago) even before the family returned home, only weeks before the Great Fire of 1871. Two years later, Freer exhibited in the first Interstate Industrial Exposition art exhibition, and in 1876 he was elected to the Chicago Academy of Design, a mark of his rising local reputation. On a second sojourn in Europe, between 1877 and 1880, Freer associated with some of Americas leading expatriate artists, notably Frank Duveneck, an influential exponent of the Munich style, and William Merritt Chase, an American pioneer of impressionist painting. On his return to the U.S., Freer settled in New York City, became active in numerous artists organizations, and exhibited widely. He worked in every genre of subject matter and explored a variety of media, including etching, pastel drawing, and watercolor painting; in the late 1880s he was even in demand as a book illustrator. Following a third trip abroad, Freer taught at New Yorks Art Students League. With his marriage, he began to specialize in images of women and children, for which his wife and the couples six children frequently served as models. The successful exhibition of one such work brought Freer election as an associate member of the National Academy of Design in New York, and in 1889 he was represented in the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Possibly to take advantage of Chicagos plentiful art opportunities, Freer returned home in 1890. Thereafter, he adopted the brighter colors and distinct brush strokes of impressionism in some of his figural works and painted landscapes outdoors and on site, according to impressionist practice. Freer was a beloved instructor at the Art Institute where he began teaching in 1892. Busy with local portrait commissions, he continued to exhibit nationally and to serve on juries, including the national art jury for the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago. At the exposition he won a medal; other honors were awarded to his work in exhibitions at the National Academy, the Art Institute, and other venues. Freer was among a handful of artists of his generation who maintained a national presence while living in Chicago: One of Chicagos Own BoysHe Was Born Here and His Pictures Are Known the World Over, trumpeted a headline in the Chicago Evening Post in 1891.i The artists successful career was capped by a retrospective show presented at the Art Institute in early 1906, two years before his death at age fifty-eight. The Old Veil is an exceptional example of the "fair women" paintings which established Chicago-born Frederick W. Freer's artistic reputation during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. A subtle work that defies easy categorization, The Old Veil is part portrait, part character study, and part genre scene with its understated narrative, as well as a ravishing interior view complete with the dazzlingly display of textures Freer relished painting. The Old Veil dates from a key period in Freer's career-circa 1886-88-following an important European trip he had made with American Impressionist William Merritt Chase and H. Siddons Mowbray. After this excursion, which seems to have included a visit to Antwerp, Spain and Holland with Chase, Freer began to shed his darker Munich Academy manner in favor of the lighter palette and flickering brushwork that characterizes The Old Veil. Also in 1886, Freer married Margaret Cecilia Keenan of New York, herself a painter and an artists' model, who became the subject of his most significant paintings for the remainder of his life. In this work, doubtless painted around the time of their wedding, Freer portrays Keenan with a blend of romanticism and realism: her reflection captures something thoughtful, beyond mere vanity. From his early days as an art student in Munich, Freer seems to have been particularly fascinated with painting objects that possess transparency or have reflective surfaces, such as veils, mirrors, windows, and clear glass vases full of flowers. Such devices played especially well against the dark backgrounds favored by the Munich realists. Interestingly, in The Old Veil, despite the brighter Beaux-Arts palette, Freer continues his trademark fascination with such surfaces in particularly rich combination: the transparency of the veil, the delicate openwork of the lace, the mirror, and the glance off the embroidered silks worn by the bride. Interestingly, an early owner of this painting, Miss Isabel R. Edgar of New York, was, like Freer, a student of William Merritt Chase. During the later 1880s and 1890s, Edgar served as director of the Indianapolis Art Association, where she exhibited not only The Old Veil from her own collection, but also works on loan from contemporary American painters of her acquaintance in New York, in Indianapolis. As one writer noted of her goals in bringing current New York art trends to Indiana: "With the taste of an advanced art student she has been able to select pictures from the studios of New York artists, which have qualities of art education, so to speak. I mean that the paintings she obtains from these artists are not only of interest from their subjects, but have positive qualities of technic [sic] which show the visitors at these exhibitions exactly how our artists are painting today" (Ernest Knaufft, "Art in Indianapolis," The Art Amateur, vol. 23, no. 2, July 1890, p. 24).

Following the Chicago Fire of 1872, Freer returned to the States at which time he produced the present painting. He is known for his refined portraiture - "a poet in color." (See Frederick W. Morton, Frederick W. Freer, Painter, in: Brush and Pencil. Vol. VIII no. 6 (Sept., 1901), pp. 289-300). Provenance: The Schnorrer Club of Morrisania, The Bronx, New York. Established in 1881, the Schnorrer Club was a recreational social club. Membership included many notable figures active in Democratic party politics. It closed in 1966. 1872.
