        OLIVER FRAZER (KENTUCKY, 1808-1864) ATTRIBUTED PORTRAIT OF WILLIE HOOD (1845-1863), oil on canvas, bust-length depiction of young Willie in a black suit, his black hair curled at his ears, no signature located. Housed in its original gilt and gesso frame. Circa 1863. 29" x 24" sight, 40" x 34 1/2" sight. Literature: Pennington - Lessons in Likeness: Portrait Painters in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley. Catalogue Note: Willie Hood was accidentally shot and killed by one of his schoolmates at St. Mary's College, near Lebanon, KY, on January 8, 1863. He is buried at the Ryder Cemetery in Lebanon, Marion Co., KY. According to the consignor, Frazer completed this portrait shortly after Willie's death. His parents and sister never took it out of the crate. His sister, Florie, died without issue in 1915. The portrait was purchased at her estate sale by Mrs. J. LaMotte Spalding, my great-uncle's wife. Oliver Frazer (1808-1864) was born in Fayette County, Kentucky. Familiar with the work of Matthew Harris Jouett and Thomas Sully, Frazer also studied in Paris with Antoine-Jean Gros in 1834. While there, he met Thomas Couture and G. P. A. Healy. Upon his return to Lexington in 1838, he opened a studio and quickly became a recognized portraitist in the area, especially known for his portraits of Henry Clay's family. He also married Matthew Harris Joust's niece, Martha Bell Mitchell. research is ongoing.

A scarce Civil War era portrait with sitter identified as Thomas Oliver Anderson (1827-1848) of Louisville, Kentucky. Unsigned, though there may be a signature in red to the right lower corner. It is identified in an appraisal (photo included). Appraisal notes that this was painted at a military institute near Frankfort, Kentucky. Gilt framing 33''x29''. Old professional repair upper right of hair. Slight 1'' indentation near upper right edge.

        Fine unframed oil on canvas round portrait of a young mother seated on a red sofa holding a book in one hand, the other arm resting on the shoulders of her young daughter while the other younger daughter clings to her neck. The backdrop is a classical marble column with colorful landscape. The mother wears a gold pocketwatch on chain, a bracelet and gold ring. The older daughter wears a necklace and white dress. The canvas is stretched in a rectangle and was once framed with a round matte. Unsigned front but signed on back of canvas. A wonderful rendered portrait by this Kentucky artist. SIZE: 14-1/2" x 12-1/4". CONDITION: Craquelure with inpainting, very good. 9-96320
