Already at the age of 14 years Julius Franz was educated under Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann and Ferdinand August Fischer, at the Berlin Academy of Arts. Following the Golden Medal of the Berlin Academy, he undertook the grade tour in 1850. Julius Franz primarily performed commissioned work in the field of decorative arts. For example he created the now lost personifications of England and America for the Berlin stock exchange. To his most important works belong the monumental marble groups, after drafts of his teacher August Fischer, for the Belle-Alliance-Platz in Berlin. (bde)

      1824 Berlin - 1887 ebd. 'Schäfergruppe'. Mit einem Panther kämpfender Schäfer mit seinem Hund. Metallguss. Seitl. Künstlersignet. Goldbraunfarben patiniert. (Min. Abriebe). Auf rechteckigem, gekehltem, ebonisiertem Sockel, Plakette: 'Dem Geheimen Rechnungs Rath Freudemann zum 50 jährigen Dienstjubiläum 28.5.1896 gewidmet von seinen Collegen' bez. Die Figurengruppe steht im Schweriner Burggarten und im Sizilianischen Garten von Sanssouci. Ohne Sockel, H. 36 cm. Insges. 46 cm.

Julius Franz (1824-1887) – German sculptor Inscribed and dated on the left narrow side ‘Franz fec. 1851’ Dimensions: 44 x 48 x 22 cm, Dimensions of the base: 8 x 52 x 28 cm Good overall condition The group ‘shepherds and dog attacked by a panther’ was created in 1853 in large format for the Sicilian garden of Sanssouci Palace and the so-called ‘Schlossinsel’ (Castle Island) of Schwerin Condition: The figure group is in good overall condition. The surface is rubbed in places and the upper right base show some scratches. The dimensions of the sculpture, without the base are 44 x 48 x 22 cm.
