Helen Frankenthaler Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1928 - d. 2011

Helen Frankenthaler (December 12, 1928 – December 27, 2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. Having exhibited her work for over six decades (early 1950s until 2011), she spanned several generations of abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever-changing new work.[1] Frankenthaler began exhibiting her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. She was included in the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition curated by Clement Greenberg that introduced a newer generation of abstract painting that came to be known as Color Field. Born in Manhattan, she was influenced by Greenberg, Hans Hofmann, and Jackson Pollock's paintings. Her work has been the subject of several retrospective exhibitions, including a 1989 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and been exhibited worldwide since the 1950s. In 2001, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

HELEN FRANKENTHALER (1928 - 2011, AMERICAN) Untitled. Watercolor and gouache on paper, 1995. 215x280 mm; 8½x11 inches, (sheet size). 215x140 mm; 8½x5½ inche, (image size). Provenance: The artist; Gifted to Robert Louis Meyzen; Thence by descent to Robert Oliver Meyzen; Private collection, acquired from the above. Clement Greenberg, a forceful but influential critic in the Post-War American art scene, championed Helen Frankenthaler and her innovative thinning and pouring of pigments on canvas, (stain painting). In the early 1950s when Frankenthaler began showing these works, she received praise and ridicule. Much of the negativity was coupled with sexist language. Patience, perseverance, and time have a way of ruling in favor of those who are creating sincere art. In March of 1995, when Helen Frankenthaler sent this lovely composition created as a gift on a menu to her friend, Robert Meyzin, owner of La Crémaillère in Bedford New York and co-founder of La Caravelle in New York City, she was well established as a leading figure and pioneer in the artworld. Today her artistic achievements and influence are irrefutable.

By 1950 she had met many of the main figures of Abstract Expressionism. In 1958 Helen Frankenthaler married the painter Robert Motherwell. The highly intuitive process of 'stain painting' became the hallmark of Frankenthaler's style and enabled her to create color-filled canvases that seemed to float on air. She worked with a variety of printmaking techniques in addition to painting, using each of these media to explore pictorial space through the interaction of color and line on a particular surface.
