Collot, who served under Rochambeau during the Revolutionary War, was commissioned to make a reconnaissance of the Mississippi valley by Pierre Auguste Adet (1763-1834), French ambassador to the United States. He was to report of the political, economic and military situation in the region, which was under Spanish control, in anticipation of the reacquisition of Louisiana by France from Spain. But as a result of the Louisiana Purchase, however, the “work was printed, both in French ... and English, but not published, at the time of Gen. Collot’s death, which happened in 1805. More than twenty years afterwards, the whole impression came into the hands of M. Bertrand, an eminent publisher in Paris, who reserved 100 copies of the English and 300 of the French edition, and made waste paper of the remainder” (Rich, Bibliotheca Americana Nova, 2: p. 185). • Early 18th Century Mattheus Seutter Hand Colored Engraved Map of Paris Region of France
            Dec. 02, 2017

Early 18th Century Mattheus Seutter Hand Colored Engraved Map of Paris Region of France

            Est: $500 - $1,000

A Mattheus Seutter (1671-1757) hand colored engraved map titled “Carte De La Prevoste Et Vicomte De Paris, Augsburg, 1734” – Translated “Map Of The Prevoste And Vicomte Of Paris, Augsburg, 1734”. This is a historic hand colored copperplate engraving from the 18th Century, Printed in Augsburg circa 1734. Very detailed and accurate engraving, showing hundreds of place names, villages and rivers in region surrounding Paris, France. With an aesthetic title cartouche. The Rare map is matted and housed in a wood frame under glass. Measures 27.5″ x 30″ | Map is in very good condition for age and use, with some foxing and staining customary for maps of this age. Georg Matthäus Seutter (also Matthias Seutter; 1678-1757) was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century. Seutter started his career as an apprentice brewer. Apparently uninspired by the beer business, Seutter left his apprenticeship and moved to Nuremberg where he apprenticed as an engraver under the tutelage of the prominent J. B. Homann. Sometime in the early 18th century Seutter left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. Though he struggled in the early years of his independence, Seutter’s engraving skill and commitment to diversified map production eventually gained him a substantial following. Most of Seutter’s maps were heavily based upon, if not copies of, earlier work done by the Homann and Delisle firms. By 1732 Seutter was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI with the title of “Imperial Geographer”. Seutter continued to publish until his death, at the height of his career, in 1757. The Seutter firm continued under Seutter’s wastrel son Albrecht Carl until his death in 1762. Following Albrecht’s death, the firm was divided between the established Probst firm and the emerging firm of Tobias Conrad Lotter. Lotter, Matthäus Seutter’s son in law, was a master engraver and worked on behalf of the Seutter firm. Lotter would eventually become one of the most prominent cartographers of his day. Full Title Translation: “Map of the prevost and viscount of Paris, drawn up on a large number of particular memories subject to the Observations of the Academy of Sciences”

Manufacture Royale de Porcelaine de Sèvres (since 1756) The porcelain factory of Sèvres is one of the most important European manufacturers of soft paste china. Since 1756, its headquarters have been based in Sèvres. The manufactory was founded in 1740 at the Château de Vincennes on the outskirts of Paris. Vincennes began with the imitation of Meissen porcelain in order to curb the import. In 1745, the production of soft past china was launched, which enabled a number of new shapes and colors. One of the most important clients of the factory was Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), so that the factory gained a great importance and Louis XV decided the construction of the Sèvres manufactory. In 1760, it came into royal possession. In 1790, it was nationalized. Today's Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres has a porcelain museum, where selected pieces are on display, dating from the beginning until now.
