Louis FRANCAIS (Plombières, 1814 - Paris, 1897 ) Orphée au tombeau d'Eurydice Huile sur toile (Toile d'origine) Signée 'Français' en bas à droite (Restaurations) 30.5 x 40.5 cm Provenance : Collection particulière, Gironde Notre tableau reprend, avec quelques variantes, la composition d'un tableau exposé au Salon de 1863 par Louis Français, et intitulé Orphée au tombeau d'Eurydice. Le héros vient de perdre sa bien aimée et ne trouve plus le courage de jouer de sa lyre, posée à ses pieds. Inspiré des Géorgiques de Virgile, ce thème inspire une profonde mélancolie renforcée par la nuit, où les vêtements du cortège funéraire contrastent avec une obscurité épaisse, que l'on ne retrouve pas sur le tableau du salon. Italienische Landschaft mit einem Kastell. Aquarell, weiß gehöht über schwarzer Kreide und Feder in Braun. 24,2 x 41,1 cm. Um 1850. Français begann seine künstlerische Karriere als Illustrator und Lithograph. Er kam 1829 zunächst für eine Lehre als Buchhändler nach Paris und trat fünf Jahre später in das Atelier von Jean Gigoux ein. Nach seinem Salon-Debüt 1837 mit einer historischen Landschaft, kam er in engen Kontakt mit Corot, Rousseau und den anderen Barbizon-Malern, deren Werke er in Lithographien reproduzierte. Von nun an widmete er sich der reinen Landschaft und verbrachte ab 1846 vier Jahre in Italien, wo er unter anderem in der Campagna Romana zahlreiche Studien erstellte. Diese sind häufig als reine Federzeichnungen gehalten, teils aber auch, wie das hier vorliegende Exemplar aufwendig aquarelliert. Bearing the "Vente Francais" stamp, Lugt 944 (www.marquesdecollections.fr), indicating a provenance from the atelier sale on March 14 and 15, 1898 in Paris, the year after the artist passed away. Framed with double color matting and a gold fillet, in an elaborate traditional modern brass-colored frame. Visible sheet size: 8 3/8 x 11 1/2 inches. Frame size: 19 x 22 inches.

FRANCOIS LOUIS FRANCAIS (FRENCH 1814-1897) Musique Champetre, 1863 oil on canvas 54.6 x 65.5 cm (21 1/2 x 25 3/4 in.) signed and dated lower right PROVENANCE Collection of Paul Deschanel (inscription on stretcher on verso) LOT NOTES Paul Deschanel was the President of France in 1920 and was a member of the Academie Francaise. Francois Francais learned and collaborated with many of his prominent contemporaries, including Diaz de la Pena, Charles Francois Daubigny, Caruelle d’Aligny and Auguste Anastasi. He is best known for his decorative work on the baptismal fonts on the Paris church of the Trinity begun in 1878. Many of the artist’s works are in the collections such as Uffizi, Louvre, Musee d’Orsay and the Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.
