Measurements: 81 x 66 cm; 95 x 78 cm (frame). Full name Esteban Perez de la Foz Fernandez, was a prominent abstract painter within the Spanish school of the twentieth century. Despite feeling artistic inclinations since childhood, he did not receive academic training in art, so he was an intuitive artist, a self-taught artist who drank from the influences of Velázquez and Goya, whose work underwent a radical change when he met the work of Pancho Cossío. In 1954 he held his first exhibition, which took place at the Sur gallery in his hometown, and later obtained a scholarship from the Ministry of Education that allowed him to live in Paris for a while. According to his own words, this trip influenced him emotionally, but not plastically. Nevertheless, in the French capital he studied at the Grande Chaumière and the Ecole du Louvre. During these years he developed his first stage, marked by expressionist figuration. However, from 1960 onwards, his work became more abstract and intellectualized, and he began to evolve towards a plastic art that sought to reflect the problems of human activity. Throughout his career, Esteban de la Foz exhibited his work throughout Spain, and also in European cities such as Hannover and Hamburg. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions, and took part in biennials and fairs such as Arco in Madrid (1982, 1985, 1986, 1987). He is currently represented in the MNCA Reina Sofía and in the Museums of Córdoba, San Telmo de San Sebastián, León, Jaén and Vizcaya, among others, and also in the National Library and the Parliament of Cantabria.
