"Winter landscape". Oil on canvas. It has a frame of the eighteenth century.

FRANCESCO FOSCHI (Ancona, 1710 - Rome, 1780). "Winter landscape". Oil on canvas. It has a frame of the eighteenth century.

    Est: €65,000 - €75,000

FRANCESCO FOSCHI (Ancona, 1710 - Rome, 1780). "Winter landscape". Oil on canvas. It has a frame of the eighteenth century. Measurements: 69.5 x 108 cm; 85 x 122 cm (frame). A cold winter landscape is the protagonist of this composition. In all the painting predominates a cold range of grays and whites that contrast with the earthy tonalities. In the scene we can see how the artist starts from an image of the rural daily life of his environment and transmits to the viewer an idealized vision of country life and the consequences of winter. In fact, it can be seen in the center of the image how anecdotally a woman brings a blanket close to a child who extends his hands towards the small fire. Stylistically, it is important to highlight the use of a limited chromatic palette, composed of whites, a careful range of grays and small touches of brown and ochre that highlight areas of the terrain not covered by snow. These tones, combined with a precise and refined technique, make it possible to establish a relationship with Foschi's painting. Francesco Foschi's family was closely linked to the Ferretti counts of Castelferretti, whose lineage was then one of the most powerful in the Mark of Ancona; his brothers Carlo, Giacomo and Lorenzo were also painters. In 1726 he settled in Fano, a pupil of the painter Francesco Mancini, from whom he learned to paint pictures with figures. However, Foschi soon specialized in landscape painting. He seems to have lived in Rome with his family from 1729 to 1743, but was not a member of the Accademia di San Luca. His first documented commission dates from this period. From 1746 he lived in Loreto, where in addition to being a painter he was an art dealer and maintained frequent relations with Count Bonaccorsi, one of the most important patrons of the time. During these years he developed one of his favorite themes: the winter landscape. Foschi's art was part of the great Roman schools; in addition to his first master Francesco Mancini, his reference models were the Bolognese Guido Reni, his compatriot Carlo Maratta and the Roman Ciro Ferri. After another stay in Rome, in 1755 he moved to Pesaro. In 1764 he returned to Rome, where he set up his studio in Piazza di Spagna. However, he continued to return frequently to the Marche, as evidenced by the subjects of his paintings. This was the period in which his art reached its peak; in fact, the best-known winter landscapes date from these years.

Oil on panel, 67 x 86 cm (framed). This painting from Francesco Foschi's series of snowy landscapes shows a luminous and detailed scene, with several characters, including one humorously depicted with his "bare buttocks". Foschi's work is part of the great Roman schools, being influenced by his teacher Mancini, Guido Reni, Carlo Maratta and Ciro Ferri. In 1755 he moved to Pesaro, where his daughter Caterina was born, and in 1764 he returned to Rome, setting up his studio in Piazza di Spagna. During this period his art reached its greatest splendour, with his winter landscapes being particularly noteworthy. Provenance: French private collection.

Francesco Foschi, zugeschrieben 1710 Ancona - 1780 Rom Fantastical winter mountain landscape with ancient ruins Remnants of a monogram and a date "FF [?] ...] 69 [...]" (on the small rocky spur in the water) lower right. Oil auf canvas. 98 x 140 cm. Relined. Restored. On the left, a peasant family warming themselves by the fire in a rocky cave. A soldier approaches them. A mill by the water in front. In the middle ground, the ruins of an ancient amphitheatre (clearly reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome) in the style of an architectural capriccio, behind trees an allusion to the Pyramid of Cestius. In the background is an Italian mountain village. Francesco Foschi received his artistic training in Rome. He moved to Rome with his whole family in 1729. He also lived in Loreto and Pesaro. From 1764, he took up his last residence in Piazza di Spagna in Rome; Foschi was first listed as a "conte" in the registers of the parish church of St Andrea delle Fratte. In addition to his work as an art dealer, Francesco Foschi was mainly involved in painting. From 1750, he specialised in winter landscapes, which were very popular in Italy at the time. Striking compositional and stylistic similarities as well as the presumed monogram FF should allow the present painting to be categorised as a work by Francesco Foschi. However, the author of the catalogue raisonné on Foschi, Marietta Vinci-Corsini, Monaco, unaware of the original, rules out Francesco Foschi's authorship of the present painting. Stylistically comparable works can also be found in the oeuvre of Jules-César-Denis van Loo (1743 Paris - 1821 ibid.), who was also known as the "peintre des neiges".

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Oil on canvas cm. 61,5x72. Framed Francesco Foschi from Ancona was the greatest interpreter of the distinctly Nordic winter landscape genre in Italy. The canvas presented here exemplifies to the highest degree Foschi's qualities as a landscape painter and his extreme knowledge of colouring, virtues here enhanced by the admirable essentiality and clarity of the composition, with that single figure at the centre of a crossroads of paths, walking towards a mysterious destination immersed in a grandiose and inhospitable nature. Our canvas can be usefully compared with works by Foschi such as Travellers along the shore of a lake, formerly in the Fritz Heinemann collection (Vinci-Corsini, no. 32, p. 51), View of a Cottage from a Cave (Ibid., no. 34, p. 53), Landscape with Post Station and Tavern from the Musée des Beaux-arts in Lille (Ibid.,no. 109, p. 114).

Giuseppe Zais: Italian Landscapes with Shepherds.

    Est: €12,000 - €20,000

ZAIS, GIUSEPPE 1709 Forno di Canale - 1784 Trevisio Title: A Pair: Italian Landscapes with Shepherds. Date: Ca. 1750. Technique: Each oil on canvas. Measurement: 49,5 x 63cm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Giuseppe Zais is one of the most renowned landscape painters active in Venice in the 18th century. Only little is known about his life: From 1748 to 1768 he was enrolled in the "Fraglia veneziana dei pittori" (corporation of Venetian Painters), and in 1774 he became a member of the Academy of Venice. He worked a lot for private collectors, both Italian and foreign, such as the english consul in Venice, Joseph Smith. Particularly important for his education was the study of the works of Marco and Sebastiano Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli. His artistic dialogue and competition with Zuccarelli, who worked in Venice from 1735 to about 1750, gave Zais the encouragement he needed to move from a chiaroscuro and earthy palette to a softer luminosity and a lighter articulation of space. The present paintings come from a renowned private collection in Germany, where they have been for about 150 years. They are therefore a valuable addition to the corpus of paintings by Giuseppe Zais. The two landscapes can be dated around 1750 (when his antagonist Francesco Zuccarelli moved to London) and bear witness to the transformation of Zais' style. A group of shepherds stand on the banks of a river, guarding or milking a herd of cows. Relaxed and quite natural, the figures enjoy the beautiful summer day, warmed by the sun's rays that make the air seem light and golden. The palette is reduced masterful: the primary colors stand out from the background, emphasizing each figure. We are grateful to Dario Succi, Treviso, and Enrico Lucchese, Trieste, for confirming the attribution of the present paintings on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph, and for their kind support in cataloguing the present painting.
