Anton Fortuin (1880-1967), The broad cornice above a carved foliate frieze with the date ‘1944’, above a pair of panelled doors centred by a nautilus shell, the interior with one shelf, above four drawers and a hinged fall front enclosing a compartment with a sliding shelf. This sale includes a remarkable collection of pieces made by the renowned Dutch sculptor Anton Fortuin. Part of this collection is a finely decorated set of oak furniture, comprising a cabinet, a set of six dining chairs, a coffee table and a radio cabinet. Completing the collection are a pewter-inlaid coromandel candelabra and a finely carved wooden figure of Eve with the Snake. All of these pieces are not only by the same hand, they were also commissioned by the same couple: the parents of the current owner. The cabinet is dated ‘1944’, and all other pieces would probably have been made around the same time, during or around the Second World War.Fortuin was the son of a florist and, from a young age, was trained in both stone carving and drawing. After completing his education at the Academy in Ghent, he established himself as an independent furniture maker and sculptor in Amsterdam in 1901. Among his bigger projects were his contributions to the design and execution of interiors for passenger and mail ships of the Netherland Line (Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland), on the instructions of the artist C.A. Lion Cachet (1864-1945). He occasionally executed smaller figures of people and animals in wood and stone. The Eve sculpture that is part of this collection, is a particularly fine example of these more intimate works by Fortuin, A carved oak cupboard, 1944, Netherlands, 175x159x65,5 cm,
