    ‡ ELEANOR FORTESCUE-BRICKDALE (BRITISH 1872-1945) THE TRYSTING PLACE signed with monogram lower right pencil and bodycolour on Windsor and Newton sketching board 37 x 18cm; 14 1/2 x 7in 63.5 x 44.5cm; 25 x 17 1/2in (framed) Provenance Sale, Sotheby's London, 25 January 1989, lot 417 Purchased by the previous owner in the early 1990s Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, described as a ‘Pre-Raphaelite revivalist’, studied first at Crystal Palace School of Art under Herbert Bone from 1889, then St John’s Wood School of Art and finally the Royal Academy Schools. She was elected a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society, however, as a woman, she could not become a Royal Academician at the time. During World War I she designed posters for a number of government departments and after the war more than twenty commemorative stained-glass windows. Her work appears in York Minister and Bristol Cathedral. She was also an accomplished illustrator and provided illustrations for books by Tennyson and Walter Scott. In 1920, a solo exhibition of her watercolours was held at the Leicester Galleries.

Mancoff, “Brickdale’s ‘Idylls’ Re-Viewed,”  Arthuriana, vol. 26, no. 2, 2016, p. 34 In 1909, Ernest Brown, of the Leicester Galleries, commissioned a watercolor series of 28 subject from Alfred Tennyson's Idylls of the King, which Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale painted over two years. These works constituted the bulk of her 1911 autumn show at Brown's Leicester Gallery in London. The same year, the publishing company Hodder & Stoughton published Idylls of the King-a deluxe edition of the first four idylls, Enid, Vivien, Elaine, and Guinevere-that reproduced 21 of the Tennyson watercolors from the exhibition, including the present example.

    Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale RWS 1872-1945- "Rothenburg, Street Fountain"; pencil study inscribed and dated 85, page from a sketch book dated 1905, according to inscribed label attached, 40x31cm: together with eight further inscribed and dated pencil studies from the same or similar sketch book, all circa 1905, depicting "Bull Finches; Trees on a River Bank; Cottage in Rothenburg; City Gate; Balcony at Lucerne and others, each mounted, (9) (unframed) Note: born in London. She studied at the Royal Academy and worked at first mostly in illustration, moving to paintings influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists. Later, she also worked with stained-glass. Religious she donated a lot of work to churches. Amongst her best known works are The Uninvited Guest and Guinevere.
