Title is Big Bear Lake. Oil on Board. 19 1/2" by 23 1/2" framed. 12" by 16" unframed. Clyde (Victor Clyde) Forsythe (1885 - 1962) was active/lived in California, New York. Clyde Forsythe is known for Desert landscape and genre painting, cartoons. Clyde (Vic) Forsythe entered the comic strip world prior to World War I. His most successful feature was the long-running Joe Jinks, which dealt successively with automobiles, aviation, and boxing. He drew a number of other strips, and for a time, shared a studio with Norman Rockwell. Victor Clyde Forsythe was born in Southern California in 1885. Writing, drawing, and sports were among his early interests, and he combined all three when he got a job doing sports cartooning and reporting for a local paper. In the second decade of the century, he headed for New York City to work for The World. Among his earliest creations were a daily gag strip about boxing titled The Great White Dope and a Sunday Western titled Tenderfoot Tim. Briefly in 1916 and 1917, he did a daily called Flicker Films. This kidded the movies in week long continuities and was laid out in the two-tier formal later used by Ed Wheelan on Minute Movies. Joe's Car started in 1918. It was a daily humor strip dealing with Joe Jinks, his domestic life and his obsession with the increasingly popular automobile. Joe was a typical cartoon every man vain, petty, argumentative, sentimental, and possessed the required prominent nose and wispy moustache. In the 1920s, Joe took up flying, and then met a boxing champ by the name of Dynamite Dunn and became his manager. In 1928, a Sunday page was added and the feature's name was changed to Joe Jinks. In the daily, Forsythe concentrated on the gritty world of professional boxing while the Sunday page was a day of rest, covering Joe's home life and his problems. In 1933, Forsythe left Joe Jinks, where United Features syndicated it. The following year, he signed with King Features and initially began a cowboy strip called Way Out West. He then switched to a domestic feature, The Little Woman, while keeping his Western alive as a Sunday topper. Neither of these efforts was successful. He returned to Joe Jinks, drawing it daily on Sunday from May 1937 into 1938. He soon quit comics for good, suffering a nervous breakdown. Forsythe returned to Southern California, settling in San Marino. He devoted most of his remaining time to painting. Years earlier, while living in New Rochelle, New York, he had met Norman Rockwell. The younger, still struggling Rockwell became a close friend and turned to him frequently for advice. He mentions the cartoonist in his autobiographical writings, saying, Vic was about the only person I knew who would give me any real criticism. For a time, the two shared a studio that had once belonged to Western painter Frederic Remington.

CLYDE (VICTOR) FORSYTHE (1885-1962) "Soak It!" World War 1 propaganda poster maquette, circa 1918. Charcoal on board. 22 x 30 inches. Signed in lower left image. This is a striking, large original maquette depicts a muscular worker labeled "American Labor," smashing a German pickelhaube labeled "Prussia" with a large hammer, accompanied by the caption "Soak it!", an insult in use at the time. Forsythe was a prolific illustrator, cartoonist, and fine art painter who worked in a wide range of styles during his career. Notably, he was a mentor and friend to Norman Rockwell, and for some time the two shared a studio in New Rochelle, NY (which had once been Frederick Remington's studio). During the First World War Forsythe created a number of propaganda posters for the Committee on Public Information's Division of Pictorial Publicity; there is a strong possibility that this is an original design for one of these posters. Original art for First World War propaganda is very seldom seen. Condition issues notwithstanding, this dynamic poster maquette is a remarkable surviving piece of American and world history.

When WWI broke out, American commercial art was still in its early stages; most artists were still classically trained painters. That painterly approach is clearly seen in this WWI poster by Clyde Forsythe for the American Victory Liberty Loan. The Impressionistic brushstrokes of the battlefield in the background give contrast to the battered, yet jubilant serviceman that stands before us. Note the three helmets in his hands, meant to represent the felled German enemy. America's involvement in WWI was largely unanticipated, and quite expensive. The U.S. Government began soliciting bonds that everyday Americans could deposit to the cause, to be paid back by the government when the war ended with interest applied. This influx of cash flow allowed the US to buy tanks, feed soldiers, and essentially finance the path to victory. Clyde Forsythe (1885-1962) was a Californian painter that worked within the Desert Painter School with artists such as Don Percival. When WWI broke out, Forsythe was working in commercial art in New York for magazines such as the Sunday Post. He produced many great images for the war effort, and would become a mentor of Norman Rockwell. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.
