Mit weiteren 207 Eintragungen, überwiegend Halle 1782 – 1827. Paginiert "1" bis "362", 46 Seiten fehlen, 6 unpaginierte Seiten einmontiert. Mit 11 Zeichnungen, 2 Scherenschnitten und 1 Notenzitat. Vereinzelt kleine Fleckchen, einige Seiten lose. Lederband der Zeit mit goldgeprägtem Vorderdeckel, Goldschnitt. Einband schadhaft, Gelenke teilweise gerissen. Forsters Eintrag auf S. 133 lautet: "Ne quid nimis! Hac aurea Comici & ad vitam imprimis utili sententia facile Tibi memoriam recovabis Joannis Reinoldi Forster. / LL. Med. & Ph.D. G.G.O." Darunter Zusätze von fremder zeitgenössischer Hand, wohl vom Stammbuchinhaber (es finden sich im Stammbuch über 130 weitere Eintragungen von derselben Hand). – Seit 1779 hatte Forster an der Universität Halle den Lehrstuhl für Naturkunde und Mineralienforschung inne. Samson (bookplate). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, first issue with the Warrington imprint. Peter Kalm, a Swedish naturalist and student of Linnaeus, travelled in America between 1748 and 1751. One aim of his travels was to introduce new useful plants from that temperate region, and more especially to find strains of Morus rubra fit for introduction into Sweden. Kalm travelled in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Canada and gives a very important contemporary account of the Swedish settlements in New Jersey. The first edition was published in Stockholm in 1753--61. "One of the most important and reliable eighteenth-century accounts of American natural history, social organization and political situation" (Streeter). 'Forster accompanied Cook as naturalist on his second voyage. An account is given of the countries visiited in 1772-5, but for the most part this work concerns the South Sea Islands. The observations concerning the "human species" are particularly interesting... The last section presents a detailed evaluation of steps taken for the preservation of health on the voyage, notably the suggestions of James Lind. Forster deals at considerable length with the health and diseases of the South Sea islanders. He discusses venereal disease... and suggests that it was endemic in the islands, thus removing the reproach that it was introduced by the crews of Bougainville, Byron, and Wallis' (Hill). ENGLISH EDITION of Forster's Geschichte der Entdeckungen und Schiffahrten im Norden published in Frankfurt in 1784. Two English-language editions were published in 1776: the present example and another in Dublin. The work is a 'Chronicle of northern hemispheric exploration from antiquity to the middle of the 18th century, which includes... chapters on the voyages of principal seafaring countries, beginning in the 15th century' (Arctic Bibliography 5159.).

THE FITZWILLIAM COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF AN 'EXCESSIVLY RARE BOOK' (Wood) based on the author's experiences during Captain James Cook's second voyage. The work includes numerous fascinating observations including a lengthy section on 'Ice and its formation' (pp.69-102), remarks on South Georgia and 'On the Question concerning the Existence of a Southern Land': the expedition was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, and Forster appears to have been in broad agreement with Cook that there was no 'great Southern continent'. 'Forster accompanied Cook as naturalist on his second voyage. An account is given of the countries visited in 1772-75, but for the most part this work concerns the South Sea Islands... their populations, food, cannibalism, the status of women, customs, languages, and mythology. The last section presents a detailed evaluation of the the steps taken for the preservation of health on the voyage, notably the suggestions of James Lind. Forster deals at considerable length with the health and diseases of the South Sea Islanders. He discusses venereal disease on several pages and suggests that it was endemic in the Islands, thus removing the reproach that it was introduced by the crews of Bougainville, Byron, and Wallis' (Hill).
