Tom Forrestall Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor

Artist Tom Forrestall, grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, where as a child he took art classes at Nova Scotia College of Art in Halifax. His talents earned him a Fine Arts scholarship in 1954, and upon graduation from Mount Allison University, a Canada Council grant allowed him to pursue independent study in Europe. The commissioned painting he produced as a wedding gift to H.R.H Princess Margaret in 1960 was the beginning of a lucrative art career. Working mainly in egg tempera and watercolors on shaped panels, the works of painter Tom Forrestall incorporate elements of Magic Realism.

During the 1980s he began adding lithography printing to his work. The maritime paintings for sale by artist Tom Forrestall evoke an aura of mystery and a spiritual essence which at times can be disturbing, due in part to the experimental juxtaposition of his subjects. Discover the powerful and mysterious pull of the sea with vintage and contemporary maritime paintings for sale at auction.

Thomas DeVany Forrestall, C.M., O.N.S., B.F.A. LL.D., RCA was born in Middleton Nova Scotia, in 1936. Forrestall's family later moved to Dartmouth which allowed him to attend Saturday morning art classes at the Nova Scotia College of Art in Halifax in the 1940s. In 1954, Forrestall was awarded a scholarship to the Fine Arts department at Mount Allison University, where he studied with Lawren P. Harris and Alex Colville. He graduated in 1958 and received one of the first Canada Council grants for independent study which provided him with the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. Upon his return he became assistant curator of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. He has been a freelance artist since 1960. Forrestall’s art has been classified as Magic Realism – an imprecise term often used to describe the work of a coterie of east-coast Canadian painters who emerged after the Second World War (Alex Colville, Christopher Pratt, Mary Pratt). Although their geographic roots, styles and vocabularies were similar, these artists applied themselves differently, each adapting naturalism in a personal way. As an artist, Tom Forrestall is one of the leading figures associated with the visual arts of the Maritime region. His work has been exhibited and represented in every major public collection in the region and beyond, as well as in solo exhibitions in many prominent galleries worldwide. His art has been reproduced in numerous histories of Canadian art and is featured in ‘High Realism in Canada’ the 1974 book by Paul Duval. Two monographs on his paintings have been published, ‘Shaped by This Land (1974) and ‘Returning the Favour: Vision For Vision (1992).

His love and talent for the arts was fostered by creative parents from a young age. By 1954 Forrestall was enrolled in the fine arts programme at Mount Allison University where he was taught by Lawren P. Harris and Alex Colville. A successful watercolourist, he was introduced to the medium of egg tempera while at university and by 1968 this was his chosen medium and one that can be exceptionally demanding. The underdrawing and a clear understanding of how colours interact provide the critical backbone upon which small, careful and controlled brushstrokes are applied to create the finished work. Forrestall became so skilled in tempera that his work is often compared to photorealism, an association he disliked, however, as he attempted to evoke a feeling and mood beyond realist objectivity. An excerpt from a letter from the artist to the owner, dated 27 November 1989:                                                                           “The Secret Place is indeed a real place, near Hampton on the Bay of Fundy, near where I was born and grew up in Annapolis Valley... The painting has long been a favourite of mine and my wife Natalie. It has been in many exhibitions over the years from Israel to Florida and even Transylvania (sic).!!  There are several sketches, watercolour and studies for the work. One still has the fold mark down the middle when I took it to Milan to do 2 colour lithography of the “Secret Place”… The dynamics of a shape that a painting takes is very, very important for me. It is part of the creative whole and very much contributes to its idea and “Life of its own”.  I wish I could convince a major public gallery to go into this whole area of the shaped carrier for painting. The rectangle is just another shape but to use it for all painting is a mindless convention. Canada could lead the art world in a whole art movement if support for this idea was given by a major public gallery such as the Art Gallery of Ontario.  I’ve made a study of the shaped panting for over twenty-five years and have a great deal of writing on the subject. (This lot) is a perfect example of the idea of and the shape working together… This painting took about a month to do. It is hard to pinpoint time as I leave works for a “rest” period and go on with another painting sometimes having 3 or 4 on the go…”Estimate: $5,000—7,000

Forrestall also provides the following information there: “Horses are wonderful. They draw me to them, not to ride or own but to be a witness. Many years ago I saw a rider take a tumble from a horse. No one was hurt but the incident stayed with me. I was a witness. As with most of what I create, standing back and taking it all in, one thing piles upon another, and then 2 or 3 more join up in my imagination and I get going. “Imagination is greater than knowledge” A great quote from someone, and it so applies in creating art. If you don’t know the thing too well there’s room for imagination and poetry (in paint) to take over and carry the whole thing off. Too much knowledge would stifle the art and the mystery of it all. Too much knowledge would turn me off, turn me against it. There’s a magic point in preliminary studies where there’s not too much actual facts that would dampen inspiration but enough to light the fire and behold the vision aglow. For better or worse I must make the creation my own. Too much knowledge, like a photograph, robs me of this possession, this control. I must occupy it. My painting sometimes uses photographs but they never, thank heaven, look like one... Distance has always been an ingredient in my art. There’s always a personal connection to what I do. This is important but distance has to be there... Know too much and knowledge rules. Whenever I start to paint it’s done with no idea how to do it, or how it will finish.”Please note the painting is trapezoidal. The width provided in the catalogue entry reflects the narrower (top) end of the painting. The measurement at the base is 35 1/2 inches.Estimate: $4,000–6,000

This genre became closely associated with Mount Alison through Forrestall, Alexander Colville and Christopher Pratt. Paul Duval notes the medium of egg tempera is well suited to the “detailed and deliberate sort of realist paintings (Forrestall) was ambitious to produce.” Duval continues: “Like other realists, Forrestall has had to fight against a tide of abstract and pop art which was particularly strong during the 1960s.”That Forrestall was the subject of a major retrospective and monograph in 2004, attests to the merit of that struggle.

      Est: $4,000 - $5,000

THOMAS DE VANY FORRESTALL, A.R.C.A.THE CHASERegg tempera on shaped masonitesigned and titled on the reverse 33 ins x 23.25 ins; 83.8 cms x 59.1 cms Provenance:Roberts Gallery Limited, TorontoLiterature:Ian G. Lumsden, Douglas Scott Richardson, Tom and Natalie Forrestall, Shapes of the paintings interest me as an integral part of the work, Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, 1971, page 3.Tom Smart, Tom Forrestall: Paintings, Drawings, Writings, Key Porter Books, Toronto, 2008, page 61 for a closely related work entitled Preparation for the Pig, 1969, reproduced in colour.Note:In a style sometimes classified as Magic Realism, Tom Forrestall documents space, light & shade, and subjects like a historian. The content and contours of Forrestall's shaped panels heighten the viewer's response through their intrinsic blending of composition and emotion. As Ian Lumsden states, "Shape is all-important and unimportant to Tom Forrestall. The shapes of things inside the panels are what matter: these are the forms that embody meaning. But the shaping of the panel relates to the shape of things. Sometimes the subject precedes the shape, and the panel is fashioned to suit the painting; sometimes the subject of the painting is found to suit the shape of the panel already on hand."
