Condition A-: minor replaced losses at edges; slight time-staining in margins; minor creases in margins and image. Fontanet was the most prominent and successful artist of the Geneva school of graphic designers. Contrary to the Swiss artists from Basel and Zurich, the Geneva school was largely inspired by French Art Deco. Fontanet was also the director of the Societe Generale d'Affichage, a large outdoor advertising company that also provided artwork for their clients.

Condition B / B-: replaced and overpainted upper section of poster, including margin; small loss at bottom right edge; repaired tears at edges; creases, restoration, staining and water staining in margins and image; small pin holes in corners. Mounted on paper. Fontanet was the most prominent and successful artist of the Geneva school of graphic designers. Contrary to the Swiss artists from Basel and Zurich, the Geneva school was largely inspired by French Art Deco. Fontanet was also the director of the Societe Generale d'Affichage, a large outdoor advertising company which also provided artwork for their clients. Here, he cleverly evokes Mercury's winged helmet using the front end of a speeding car adding the essence of style and elegance via the use of metallic gold ink.

NOËL FONTANET (1898-1982) GRAND PRIX DE SUISSE / GENÈVE. 1938. 39 1/2x25 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x64 cm. Sonor, Geneva. Condition A-: minor repaired tears in margins; minor creases and speckling in margins and image. "While it matches the signature red-and-black color palette of his other two designs for the Swiss motorcycle Grand Prix . . . this composition isn't about rolling movement but rather comprises a single visual punch, a stamp in shallow relief meant to represent the race" (Crouse p. 185). Fontanet was the most prominent and successful artist of the Geneva school of graphic designers. Contrary to the Swiss artists from Basel and Zurich, the Geneva school was largely inspired by French Art Deco. Fontanet was also the director of the Societe Generale d'Affichage, a large outdoor advertising company which also provided artwork for their clients. Rare. Crouse p. 185.

Fontanet produced a number of Grand Prix posters (including one for the Grand Prix de Suisse motorcycle race the same year). This may be the most vivid of them all.
