IGOR FOMIN (Minsk, 1964). "Noah's Ark", 1992. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 95 x 110 cm; 97,5 x 112 cm (frame). Scene whose aesthetic language is defined by a clear realism in the execution and whose final result is a composition of surrealist character. For this purpose, the artist uses a very indeterminate background on which he arranges various elements that resemble a collage. These elements are easily recognisable in their shapes. The work represents a biblical theme, specifically from the Old Testament, "Noah's ark", who by God's design brought together a couple of each species to save them from the universal flood. The image offers the viewer a chaotic vision that at first sight does not have thematic unity, however, the presence of Noah manages to focus the viewer's attention on the work, and invites reflection from an aesthetic and thematic point of view. The aesthetics stand out for their colourful style, which can be seen in the pictorial conception of the animals, whose bulky lighting reinforces the illusion of three-dimensionality and detracts from the frontality of the composition. Igor Fomin studied architecture, although as a student he did various plastic works for the government. In 1988 he began to paint pictures, in which the characters with strange faces that would become the main feature of his mature work were already appearing. That same year he moved to Spain and settled in Torremolinos, holding his first exhibition in Benalmádena shortly afterwards. In 1992 he exhibited for the first time in New York, thus beginning a successful international career. Between 1996 and 2000 he worked exclusively for Sammer Gallery, with whom he held exhibitions all over the world. He has also won important prizes such as the Salón de Otoño de Madrid and the BMW Painting Prize.
