Abandoning the Tonalism of Birge Harrison and John Fabian Carlson—his mentors at the Woodstock Art Colony—for full-fledged Impressionism, Folinsbee, like a number of his Bucks County contemporaries, trained his eye on the region’s landscape, vernacular architecture, and industry. Painted en plein air, or directly from nature, the present lot boasts a view of New Jersey from across the Delaware River—a vantage explored on numerous occasions, and to great effect, by the artist. With suggestive daubs, Folinsbee loosely describes the distant village. A frieze of differently colored structures comprises the composition’s middleground, their profile echoing the rise and fall of the forested hillside beyond. Just right of center, smoke and steam herald an approaching locomotive, its stylized billows bridging foreground snow with cloud-filled skies. The palette, too, is characteristic of Folinsbee’s output from this early period. Subdued tones commingle with comparatively higher-key blues, teal, and pearlescent white, while carefully orchestrated passages of light and atmosphere celebrate not only site but season. The unlined canvas in excellent original condition with no sign of inpainting as seen under UV light. With slight hairline craquelure along the top outer edge. Rabbit Run Bridge is a popular subject which Folinsbee completed several times, namely in a 30 x 40 in. canvas of 1932 (Freeman's, sale of December 5, 2010, lot 116), which earned him a new reputation as the new New Hope Modernist, an "adroid, handled" painter whose compositions revealed a "nice economy of composition and stroke" and "show[ed] the power of the artist" according to critic Dorothy Graftly who singled out the larger version of the same subject during her review of the Phillips' Mill exhibition in New Hope. This specific work takes after a composition from 1927-28. Judging from its bold impasto and solid colors, however, the work likely dates from the mid-to-late 1930s.

With its rocky coastline, craggy shores and uneven, seemingly undomesticated terrain, Maine had potential to attract artists, such as Edward Redfield, who started summering in Boothbay Harbor in 1903, and later Monhegan Island where he bought a house. Maine became Folinsbee's primary focus in the 1950s, after he purchased Murphy's Corner, an old farmhouse near Woolwich, overlooking Montsweag Bay. Although the artist did not have Redfield's physical agility, he still captured the raw beauty of the littoral with a vivid, dynamic and liberating brushwork, either from land or at sea, which became possible once the artist bought a lobster boat, Sketch, which enabled him to approach the water without too much difficulty, and capture its transcient nature from different perspectives. The present landscape presents a bird's-eye view of the open sea, most likely off Seguin Island, where one spots a salmon weir stretching at a diagonal between the land and a small island in the middle of the composition. Via smooth and fluid strokes of dark greens, blues and whites from left to right, Folinsbee suggests the strong, turbulent wind which plows the region and forces the water to constantly hit and recede from the shore, which conveys a theatrical effect to the painting. As Kristen Jensen notes, "Folinsbee saw in the water what Homer, George Bellows, Robert Henri, and countless others saw - a challenge to transfer onto the still canvas the essence of movement, of something undergoing constant transformation not only volumetrically, but also tonally and in the way the light reflects off its ever-changing surface."

Note Commissioned in 1920 at a time when Folinsbee was travelling outside of Bucks County, this unique work was designed as an overmantel decoration for the room of the Mayflower Inn, an old farmhouse in Washington, Connecticut which Folinsbee’s friends and mentors also helped decorate and renovate. The triptych is representative of Folinsbee’s early Impressionistic technique, bestowing a highly fragmented touch and rapid, energetic brushstrokes which the artist dispatches across the canvas in various sizes, orientations, and colors. The result is a woven, tapestry-like pattern which blends the three canvases together and dazzles the eye. The subject of the painting becomes less the house nestled in the woods, and more the pattern created by the foliage, the tight sequence of trees and the added texture of the brushwork. The result is an enchanting, almost magical, atmosphere which the viewer is invited to penetrate, so as to enjoy the last hours of this dramatic fall afternoon.

Note In the early 1920s, Folinsbee travelled to New England and visited the art colonies of Gloucester and Ipswich, Massachusetts, as well as the nearby towns of Rockport and Annisquam, where he joined his friends Jonas Lie and Harry Leith-Ross. Upon his return to New Hope, Folinsbee had found a new inspiration and adopted a different style, bolder in execution and color, with sparkling jewel-tones and less muted, atmospheric qualities. Slowly, the artist began to incorporate such novelties into his winter scenes, as proven by Mending the Canal Bank, which radiates with bright swaths of greens, blues as well as subtle touches of pinks, yellows and reds. As Kristen Jensen notes, while "Folinsbee's earlier winter landscapes are more poetic, with soft snow and quiet misty atmospheres (...), those from the early 1920s are highly emotive, with a deep, mysterious quality that stems directly from his altered palette and changing interest in light." At the same time, Folinsbee began to experiment with a new way to compose his paintings, usually using a nearby canal or river to guide the viewer's eye into the deep-end of the pictorial space, as exemplified here through the use, not only of the sinuous canal that stretches into the horizon, but also of the presence of several tall buildings rising to the left of the canal bank, thus imposing a graduated tunnel vision that allows our eye to venture everywhere in the canvas, and to capture the energetic palette knife, and rich impasto. Jensen notes that the solidity of the buildings on the left also nicely contrasts with the rest of the canvas, which relies on more subtle and curving shapes, "which shimmer and shift with longer and more fluid brushstrokes." Critics did notice the difference, and when Mending the Canal Bank was exhibited in 1923, The New York Times noted an "absence of claptrap, the same clear understanding of the physical side of [its] subject." A review of Folinsbee's solo show at Ferargil the following year applauded the artist's use of higher-keyed color as well as his newfound "growth on the technical side." Interestingly, such technique is what makes Mending the Canal Bank a resolutely contemporary canvas, although figurative. It is indebted to the Ashcan School, and especially to Robert Henri, who employed the same compositional tactics to emphasize "the cavernous valleys created by the skyscrapers of the modern metropolis," thus proving that Folinsbee's choice to depict the rural world in which he lived still allowed him to reach modernity and share the aesthetic sensibility adopted by New York art circles at the time.
