Folger.” All encompassed in original deep molded wood frame with original label on reverse “James W. Folger • Artistic • Wood • Carvings • Paintings • of • Nantucket • Scenery.” Scene 13 in. x 7 in. Overall 19 in. x 13 in. Provenance: Property of a Lady, Rhode Island James Walter Folger, an artisan from Nantucket was mainly self-taught. He worked briefly in 1869 as a journeyman for a wood carver in Cambridge, Massachusetts and continued to create carved animal heads, ornamental carvings and historical dioramas upon his return to Nantucket. Folger was also a painter in oil and watercolors, creating historical scenes of Nantucket.

'1746 The Old Mill, Nantucket' is carved with the right end simulating a broken board. The second bears no title other than '1746', the year The Old Mill was built. The carving occupies the left end of the board; presumably the remaining space was for a custom inscription or image. Both with a "James W. Folger Artistic Wood Carvings Paintings of Nantucket Scenery" business card affixed to the reverse. James Walter Folger was an extremely skillful painter and wood carver.           Merganser with Carved Wings and Tail

          Early and rare merganser attributed to James Walter Folger (1851-1918) of Nantucket Island, Mass. Nicely carved deep curved and raised wingtips and a thin shallow ice groove on back. Expertly executed paddle tail and undercut rump. Lightly crackled paint is a combination of original and very old gunning touchup as would be expected of a bird of this age. Alert head with the original bill. Very small old chip missing from base of neck and a thin tight crack at neck base. Retains poured, inlet weight. The Folgers were historically significant in the formation of the whaling industry on the island in the early 1800's. Recently discovered on Nantucket in the attic of the Coffin family. Provenance: By descent in the family
