  • Giovanni Battista Foggini, Three Studies for a Standing Figure
    May. 16, 2024

Giovanni Battista Foggini, Three Studies for a Standing Figure

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

These three sheets are studies for one and the same full-length statue, sketched on one sheet of paper, as the matching depiction on the reverse of the sheets shows. They relate to a series of pro-jects contained in the Giornale, Foggini's sketchbook preserved in the Uffizi, probably in-tended for an unrealized monument in memory of Grand Prince Ferdinand (Florence, GDSU, n. 8027 A, in particular fol. 49r, 50r, 52r; see Monaci 1977, cat. 79; fig. 1). The eldest son of Cosimo III, Ferdinand was the destined successor but he died in 1713, before his father and without descendants. His younger brother, Gian Gastone, became Grand Duke in 1723, before dying childless. Tuscany, without an heir from the Medici family, then passed into the hands of Lorraine's family. Grand Prince Ferdinand was usu-ally represented as a war leader, dressed in armor and holding the staff of command, attribute of power (see: the portrait of Niccolò Cassana, c. 1695, Florence, Galleria Palatina).

Giovanni Battista Foggini, Study for an Apse

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Foggini was initially apprenticed to the painter Vincenzo Dandini in Florence, but soon showed a greater inclination for sculpture. In 1673, he was sent by the young Cosimo III to study at the recently founded "Accademia Fiorentina" in Rome. After his return to Florence, he continued to be under the protection of the Medici and was appointed court sculptor in 1687 and soon afterwards court architect of the Grand Duchy. His pupils included Balthasar Permoser, who further developed Foggini's style.

Foggini, Giovanni Battista: Merkur mahnt Aeneas zur Abfahrt von Karthago

    Est: €3,000 - €4,500

Kira d’Alburquerque: "The Partial Reconstruction of Two Sketchbooks by Giovanni Battista Foggini", in: Master Drawings, Bd. 49, Nr. 1 (2011), S. 67-94, hier S. 72). -- -- - Provenienz: Sammlung Matthias Komor, New York. -- Privatsammlung New York. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Head of St. John Attributed to Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652 - 1725)

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Over life sized model carved in white Carrara marble. After completing his training as a painter, the Florentine artist Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652 - 1725) was sent by Grand Duke Cosimo III de Medici to Rome in 1673 to study sculpture. After three years he returned to Florence, where he worked for the Medicis and was appointed court sculptor in 1687. He was mainly engaged in the interior design and sculptural decoration of churches. The Saxon sculptor Balthasar Permoser (1651 - 1732) stayed in Florence several times from 1677 onwards, and we know from invoice records that he also worked for the Medicis. It was during this time that the close, probably friendly relationship between Foggini and Permoser, who was only a year younger, developed, and his work was decisively influenced by this encounter. Full-scale representations of the severed head of St John, usually presented on a platter (Mark 6:28), have been known since the 13th century. Along with the relics of the cross and Christ's robe, the head of St. John was of special significance, being one of the most coveted and valuable relics in Christian history. Several places claim to possess an original. The most famous and perhaps most spectacular of the head relics is in Notre Dame Cathedral in Amiens.

Paar BronzefigurenGEFANGENE AN MARMORVOLUTEN Höhe: je 51 cm. Guss wohl noch 18. Jahrhundert. Zu seinen berühmten Schülern zählt u.a. Balthasar Permoser. A.R. Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Giovanni Battista Foggini (Florence, 1652 - 1725) "Allegorical portrait of Medici as Neptune" Grey marble sculpture. From the ducal quarry. Foggini was an Italian architect and sculptor. He first trained as a painter, although he soon abandoned this technique in favour of sculpture. In 1673 Cosimo III de´ Médici sent him to Rome to study at the Florentine Academy, where he studied under Ercole Ferrata for three years. His great virtuosity soon became apparent, as his first sculptures show, including "The death of the children of Niobe” a terracotta which is currently kept in Florence, and “Adoration of the Shepherds”, a marble sculpture kept at the Hermitage, among others. He was named premier sculptor in 1687 on his return to Florence, after the death of Ferdinando Tacca, and later, in 1695, premier architect. He was also superintendent of the ducal foundry and of the Medicis´ carving and stone workshops. Throughout his career he worked on many monuments and also did portraits, such as the one kept at the Prado, “Charles II on horseback”, which he forged in gilded bronze in 1698, or the one of Cardinal Giancarlo de´ Medici (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) His art and style prevailed, thanks to his disciples, until the arrival of neoclassicism.
