Vintage Howard Fogg Railroad Advertising Prints

        Est: $150 - $300

Featured in this lot are Three (3) Vintage Howard Fogg Railroad Advertising Prints. Howard Lockhart Fogg (1917-1996) is often referred to as the dean of American railroad artists. He said of himself that he wasn't an artist who painted trains, but a railroader with a paintbrush, and his love of trains is reflected in his work. Many of the artists that preceded him used exaggerated colors and proportions to emphasize the power and drama of a locomotive. Fogg broke with that tradition and became known for his startling accuracy and realism. He would ensure that every detail was correct, yet his work lost none of the drama and excitement of his predecessors. As the diesel locomotives rolled out of the American Locomotive Company plant in Schenectady, New York in the 1940's, 50's and early 60's, Howard Fogg was commissioned to paint locomotive after locomotive. Of these numerous paintings, Alco had some forty-eight reproduced. Without doubt, Fogg was the outstanding artist painting trains. His capture of rolling stock as it passed through its native environment presents sheer beauty of both locomotive and background to the viewer. In these prints, Fogg focused on steam locomotives, one in the more arid Western states, the other two traverse Rocky Mountain autumn and winter landscapes. Fogg's attention to detail is on full display in each print, the majesty and imposing presence of steam locomotives underway. The prints are in nice condition, some age tanning and foxing observed. Painted wood glazed frames are in fair to good overall condition, one has split side rail. Visible art for each measures 10.5"W x 13.5"L, each frame is 13"W x 16"L x 1.25"D, combined weight is 5lb, 4oz.

Howard Fogg Watercolor - Western Railroad Scene

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

**First Time At Auction** Howard Lockhart Fogg (American, 1917-1996). Watercolor of Colorado and Northwestern Railway, mid 20th century. Signed at lower left. A beautiful watercolor of the Colorado and Northwestern Railway with the snow-capped Rocky Mountains in the distance by Howard Fogg. Oftentimes referred to as the dean of American railroad artists, Fogg was devoted to trains and he cleverly described himself as a railroader with a paintbrush rather than an artist who painted trains. His enthusiasm for locomotives certainly comes through in this painting; and yet, rather than subscribing to the more typical exaggeration of proportions and color to amplify the power of the train, Fogg valued realism and went to great lengths to be accurate and ensure that every detail was correct. A stunning example of Howard Fogg's exceptional railroad art, set in a custom frame behind glass. Size (sight view): 17" L x 21.375" W (43.2 cm x 54.3 cm) Size (frame): 22.875" L x 26.75" W (58.1 cm x 67.9 cm) Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Wilmette, Illinois, Howard Fogg came by his passion for railroads via his father who was a Vice President of the Litchfield and Madison Railroad. After studying English literature at Dartmouth College and graduating with honors, he studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1941, Fogg joined the Army and was a 2nd Lieutenant with pilot's wings in the Army Air Corps. According to the book entitled "Fogg in the Cockpit" he participated in 76 combat missions in P-47 Thunderbolts as well as P-51 Mustangs. His service was rewarded with the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1946, following years of service in the Army Air Corps, Fogg was hired by Duncan Fraser (President of the American Locomotive Company) to be a company artist. Over the course of 40 years, Fogg was commissioned to illustrate several railroad books. In addition, the President of Monon Railroad, John W. Barriger III, was a major patron who commissioned 17 paintings as President of the Monon, and Barriger continued to commission even more paintings from Fogg when he moved to The Pittsburg and Lake Erie, the Rock Island, as well as other railroads. Later in his career, Fogg and his family moved to Boulder, Colorado where he became friends with Howard and Ed Trumble and created over 70 paintings for their Leanin' Tree fine art greeting cards business. Interestingly, Fogg also produced several LP records of steam locomotives from recordings that he created between 1955 and 1960. These were initially released by Howard Fogg Recordings and later reissued by Owl Records operated by Boulder conservationist Oakleigh "Oak" Thorne. Fogg's love for railroads was constant, enduring throughout his lifetime, and upon his death, his sons abided by their father's wishes to have his ashes scattered along the Union Pacific railroad tracks on Sherman Hill, Wyoming. Several books have been written about Howard Fogg. These include: "Fogg and Steam" (1978) by Frank Clodfelter, "Howard Fogg and the Diesel Image" (1987) by John J. Scala, "The Railroad Artistry of Howard Fogg" (1999) by Ronald C. Hill and Al Chione, and "Fogg in the Cockpit" (2011) by Richard and Janet Fogg. Provenance: private Concord, California, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #176620

Howard Fogg, New York, New Haven, & Hartford Railroad #773, Original water color painting, 28" x 23"

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Howard Fogg New York, New Haven, & Hartford Railroad #773 Original water color painting Here's your chance to own an original painting by the master railroad painter himself, Howard Fogg. This original watercolor painting is well documented and is ready to find its' next care taker to treasure and enjoy it. The painting features the New York, New Haven, & Hartford "Merchants Limited" streaking along the Shore Line Route near East Lyme, Connecticut. This detailed information comes from John Scala who documented this painting for his book, " Howard Fogg and the Diesel Image" Scala confirmed for his book that Fogg created five commissioned works for the New Haven with two of them including this painting being documented in his book. He lists the date of the painting as 1949. As for the painting itself, the visible image measures 19 1/2" x 14 3/8". The work is signed in the lower right corner. The matting has, "Original Painting by Howard Fogg" stamped in gold lettering at the lower right just below the signature. The frame is believed to be original. When Scala wrote the book, the backing paper was removed so the work could be photographed outside the glass. When the backing paper was replaced the original framing tag was transferred to the new backing paper. The original framing tag is from Downtown Frame & Picture Co. at 27 Thames Street in New York City. There is also a second tag from Waverly, Iowa after the backing paper was replaced. The frame has some minor scratches and scuffs while the matting also exhibits some slight yellowing from age. The painting itself retains strong colors with no notable condition issues. The frame measures 28" x 23" Included with the painting is a copy of the letter sent from John Scala to the owner thanking him for use of the painting in the book.
