  • Clément. ca. 1900.
    Mar. 03, 2024

    Clément. ca. 1900.

    Est: $2,700 - $3,000

ARTIST: ARTHUR FOACHE (1871-1967) SIZE: 37 3/4 x 54 1/2 in./96 x 138.4 cm PRINTER: Imp. Bourgerie, Paris DESCRIPTION: Arthur Foache created a radiant—even erotic—image for Clément bicycles, a field that he certainly specialized in. Adolphe Clément opened his first bicycle manufacturing business in 1878, complete with a repair shop and cycling school. By 1890, his small local business had become the most popular bicycle brand in France. As Clément was also a fanatical racer, it seems only fitting that the muse in this poster should be carrying the many laurels won by him and his brand. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

  • La Dépèche. 1897.
    Jul. 18, 2023

    La Dépèche. 1897.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ARTIST: ARTHUR FOACHE (1871-1967) SIZE: 55 3/4 x 27 3/8 in./141.5 x 69.5 cm PRINTER: Imp. Cassan Fils, Paris DESCRIPTION: Provenance: The Karl Lagerfeld Collection. Green in several shades is the dominant color, with only the woman’s brown hair and tiny patches of blue in the background for contrast—yet somehow it all works, with the languid lady idly perusing the advertised paper serving as a magnet for our attention. Interestingly, The Poster of October, 1899, wasn’t entirely pleased with this work: “Foache’s poster for ‘La Dépèche’ is not so happy in conception, but is noted principally for being mainly a harmony of greens. We should have liked to have seen a more cheerful face on the reader of ‘La Dépèche.’ The artist is well known in the South of France, and we shall look to him to produce even better work than that under review” (p. 79). Be that as it may, we think it’s lovely. (Art Nouveau; Literary)

ARTHUR FOACHE (1871-1967) [LA GARONNE.] 1898. 27 1/4x20 1/4 inches, 69 1/4x51 1/2 cm. Cassan Fils, Toulouse. Condition A / A-: small repaired tears and creases at edges. In the 1890s, Cassan Fils was one of the largest printers in Toulouse and one of the best in France. They were an extremely dynamic company that had opened up an office in Paris and commissioned posters by Baylac and Mucha. This allegory of the river, La Garonne, which flows from the Pyrenées to Bordeaux, was designed as a poster to advertise the firm and appears with several different text variations. The drawing and design owe a lot to Alphonse Mucha, but the colors are purely Foäche's. Cassan Fils also used this print as a present for clients and had it printed without text, as seen here. Abdy p. 149 (var), DFP-II 359 (var).

    Clement. ca. 1900.

    Est: $5,000 - $6,000

Clement. ca. 1900.This striking, highly decorative poster bothers little with the actual details of the bike, instead opting to emphasize pride of ownership via an allegorical figure (reminiscent of Nike of Samothrace, a famous figure in the Louvre) who holds the laurels won by the machine. Though it was thought to have been anonymously-created until recently, the authorship for this poster has been firmly attached to Foache, a turn-of-the-century artist from the south of France, who worked primarily in Toulouse. 53 1/2x37 inches. Bourgerie, Paris. Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds; minor restored losses in top margin. This outstanding poster, in the purest French Art Nouveau style, is an incredible tour-de-force of curvaceous line, outline and color. The gracious allegory of victory advertises one of the most important bicycle companies of the time. Adolphe Clement was a pioneer in all senses of the word. A locksmith with a small store on the rue Brunel in Paris (the same street where Cheret had an early studio!) he began bicycle racing in 1878 and founded his bicycle company shortly thereafter. By 1890, along with Peugeot and Darracq, Clement was one of the larger manufacturers in the market. In 1891 he bought the exclusive rights to the Dunlop pneumatic tire throughout all of France. He was also a pioneer in advertising, realizing very early on the power of good marketing, and he employed top artists to advertise his company, including Misti and Pal. This poster is certainly the most elegant of the entire series. It has only recently been attributed to Foache thanks to a preparatory drawing signed by him which has surfaced. However, it is difficult to ascertain if this is the same Arthur Foache, born in Brittany and known as a landscape painter.
