You might expect that a film named "Blood and Sand" would have somewhat grittier promotion than what we're given in this 2-sheet seduction. But when you're dealing with Rudolph Valentino-the iconic sex symbol and one of the most recognized stars from the silent movie era-emphasizing the sexy was more likely than not everyone's first promotional impulse. "Blood and Sand"-or "Bloody Arena" as it was titled in France-tells the tale of an impoverished village boy who grows up to become one of the greatest matadors in Spain. He marries a beautiful, virtuous friend from his childhood, but once he becomes famous he finds himself drawn to a wealthy, seductive widow with whom he embarks on a torrid affair with rather sadomasochistic overtones. Feeling guilty over his betrayal, the matador grows more and more distracted and reckless in the arena. Eventually killed in a bullfight, he does manage to reconcile with his wife scant moments
