A complete set of six plates making part of a circular design probably intended as decoration for silverwork what would explain the design in the format of a ring The inventor of the series is the famous painter and designer Frans Floris who worked in Antwerp as a painter with very high reputation. Cornelis Cort was the engraver. The series was first published by Hieronymous Cock in 1563. Hollstein describes three states, in the second state Cock's address details were replaced by Julius Goltzius's address, which was again removed in third state when the plates were also separated. Our state corresponds with the second state on two with Goltzius address on three of the prints. This is a rare series, especially when found the complete series as here. --- Scene 1: The birth of Jacob and Esau; Rebekah on a bed on the left; servants take care of the children on the right; scene flanked by columns; --- Scene 2: Esau selling his birth right; seated in a forest, Esau sells his birth right to an old man for a bowl of stew; scene flanked by columns; --- Scene 3: Jacob receiving Isaac's Blessing; Jacob on his knees before Isaac's bed; a servant is standing on the right; Through the door Esau is seen as a poor man, scene flanked by columns;--- Scene 4: The marriage of Jacob and Leah and Leah giving birth; Laban gives Leah in marriage to Jacob at a table; they are surrounded by attendants of the feast; on the left Leah is giving birth on her bed; she is taken care of by Rachel and a servant; scene flanked by columns; --- Scene 5: Jacob meeting Rachel at the well;--- Scene 6: The return of Jacob to Canaan; Jacob, his wives and his sons enter Canaan on mules; all riding towards the left.

This work represents the Israelites gathering manna in the desert. The theme comes from the biblical story Exodus 16:14-22: "And when the dew that fell was gone, behold, on the face of the wilderness there was a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another: It is manna; for they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat. This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according as he eateth, an omer apiece, according to the number of your souls: take every man according to the number of your persons; take every man for them that are in his tent. And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing left over, and he that gathered little had no lack: every man gathered according as he had eaten. And Moses said, Let no man leave it until the morning. But they hearkened not unto Moses, but some left it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was wroth with them. And they gathered it every morning, every man according to what he had eaten; and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. And it came to pass on the sixth day that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers to a man; and all the chiefs of the congregation came and told Moses." The stylistic and aesthetic characteristics of the work indicate a strong influence of Frans Floris. A Flemish painter primarily known for his religious, history and portrait paintings, he was one of the leading representatives of Renaissance painting in the Netherlands, specifically of what is known as the Romanist school. Romanists generally traveled to Italy, where they studied the works of the leading masters of the High Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, Raphael and their followers. Their art assimilated these Italian influences and introduced them into the Nordic pictorial tradition, giving rise to a new language. Today we have little documentary information about the life of Frans Floris, although we have information about his youth and training thanks to Karel van Mander, who devotes ten pages of his "Schilder-boeck" (Harlem, 1604), one of the most extensive of the work. His brothers were also outstanding artists. Cornelis was a sculptor and architect, responsible for the design of the Antwerp Town Hall, Jacob was a stained glass painter and Jan Floris was a ceramist. Like his brothers, Frans Floris began his training as an apprentice sculptor, but soon left this discipline to devote himself to painting. He settled in Liège, where he studied with the prominent painter Lambert Lombard, a friend of his brother Cornelisz and trained with him in Rome around 1538. He would later move to Antwerp, the artistic center of the Flemish school at this time, where he attained the rank of master of the Guild of St. Luke between 1539 and 1540. Encouraged by Lombard to study in Italy, he probably traveled to Rome in the early date of 1541-42. There he marveled at contemporary Italian artists, especially Michelangelo and Raphael, as well as the ancient sculpture he discovered in the city. He would later visit other Italian cities, including Mantua and Genoa. On his return to Antwerp, around 1545, he opened his own workshop following the Italian model. Van Mander explains that he achieved great success, which went to his head and led him to alcoholism. What is certain is that he enjoyed a privileged economic situation, as evidenced by the luxurious palace designed for him by his brother Cornelis. Within his production, the altarpieces made mainly with the help of his workshop, destined for the main churches of Antwerp, stand out for their number. He also painted large-scale works for Spanish and Flemish clients, although by comparison only a few of his works have survived to the present day, mainly due to the iconoclastic fury that developed in Antwerp in the second half of the 16th century. His style is characterized by its cleanliness and strength, reflecting the monumental style of his Italian models. His technical execution also reveals a quick hand, a luminous chromaticism and a mastery in depicting anatomy that was rare in the Flemish school of the time. His style exerted an important influence on his time not only thanks to his numerous disciples and followers, but also due to the numerous reproductions of his work by engravers such as Jerome Cock, Cornelis Cort or Theodor Galle. At his death, the project he was working on (a commission for the Spanish Church).

Surgissant la plupart du temps de fonds neutres et sombres et peints dans un format proche du naturel, ces visages viennent interpeler le spectateur bien plus que ne le font les protagonistes de scènes plus importantes. Hier ist der Sinn des Sehens gemeint, weswegen die im Halbakt wiedergegebene, jugendliche Gestalt mit einem Spiegel dargestellt wird, der seitlich schräg an einem Band am Sockel einer Säule angebracht ist und in dem das Gesicht von der Seite widergespiegelt wird. Entsprechend dem Vergnügen des Sehens zeigt die jugendlich wiedergegebene Dame ihre Reize, aber auch ihren eleganten Hals- und Kopfschmuck. Ferner hat der Maler in sinnlicher Absicht das Goldglänzen ihres Umhanges zur Wirkung gebracht. Davor ein Adler mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln, Sinnbild der extremen Sehkraft dieser Vögel. Kalvarienberg Öl auf Holz. 105 x 72,5 cm. Um 1550. Oben halbrund eingezogen. Parkettierklötze ersetzen ehemalige Einschubleisten. Der Maler hat zusammen mit seinem Bruder, dem Architekten und Bildhauer Cornelis, wesentlich die nordische Renaissance mitgeprägt. Die Reisen der beiden Künstler nach Rom haben bei dem Maler merklich auf sein Werk eingewirkt. Besonders der Einfluss Giorgio Vasaris und Michelangelos hinterließ sichtbare Spuren. Alsbald wurde Frans Floris als der „niederländische Raffael“ angesehen, nicht zuletzt durch die Verbreitung seiner Werke vor allem in Kupferstichen und Wiederholungen seiner großen Werkstatt. Vor allem die Farbgebung des vorliegenden Gemäldes hebt sich von der Palette der früheren gotischen Malerei ab, in Richtung einer Farbauffassung, wie wir sie bei Vasari finden. Das Gemälde, wohl Altarblatt eines Seitenaltars oder einer Privatkapelle, zeigt den Gekreuzigten in unverhältnismäßiger Vergrößerung dominierend als Hauptgegenstand, im Gegensatz zu den weiteren Figuren, was von den realistischeren früheren Auffassungen abweicht. Dieser Relativierung entspricht auch, dass die begleitenden Figurengruppen synchronoptisch die Geschehnisse vor der Kreuzigung illustrieren. So sehen wir in der rechten Bildseite die Kreuztragung und gleichzeitig die Heilige Veronika mit dem Schweißtuch. Noch weiter rechts die drei trauernden Marien zusammen mit Johannes, während dieselben Gestalten großformatig unterhalb des Kreuzes nochmals gezeigt werden. Hierbei wirkt Magdalena in prächtiger Kleidung und Platzierung hervorgehoben, was mit der Auftragslage in Zusammenhang zu sehen wäre. Links im Bild werden drei Reiter mit Turban bzw. Helm gezeigt. Den Schädel Adams, traditionell sonst am Fuße des Kreuzes, hat der Maler in die rechte untere Ecke neben den Korb mit den Leidenswerkzeugen versetzt. Wie üblich, ist in den Gesichtern auch Portrait-Absicht von Zeitgenossen zu sehen. Die Mauern und Gebäude im Hintergrund, vor allem die Türme, vermitteln eher den Eindruck einer gotischen Stadt. A.R. Il dut en réaliser au moins une centaine au cours de sa carrière, nous livrant avec théâtralité les traits d'hommes et de femmes aux expressions et aux costumes variés. Surgissant la plupart du temps de fonds neutres et sombres et peints dans un format proche du naturel, ces visages viennent interpeler le spectateur bien plus que ne le font les protagonistes de scènes plus importantes. Notre panneau appartient à cet ensemble, en présentant la particularité d'offrir deux visages, celui d'une femme à la coiffure sophistiquée et celui d'un homme barbu au regard doux, chacun les yeux levés au ciel dans un dialogue muet avec lui-même. 1. NIEDERSTRECKUNG DES HELIODORUS IM TEMPEL Öl auf Holz. 135,7 x 228 cm. Rechts unten mit Inschrift: „MACHABEI.IB/ 2°...AD“. In glattem schwarzem Rahmen. Anbei ein umfangreicher Untersuchungsbericht von A.M. Roorda Boersma-Pappenheim, Rotterdam 2010/12. Das Thema stammt aus dem zweiten Buch Makkabäer, III:25-29. Heliodorus erhielt vom syrischen Seleukidenkönig den Auftrag, die Schätze aus dem Tempel des Königs Salomo in Jerusalem zu stehlen. Doch wie auf diesem Gemälde dargestellt, wurde er von einem Reiter niedergestreckt und von dessen Begleitern, die hier als Engel dargestellt sind, gegeißelt. Das Sujet, das oft als eine Vorwegnahme der Vertreibung der Geldwechsler aus dem Tempel durch Christus angesehen wird, ist oftmals zu sehen in der niederländischen Kunst des 16. Jahrhunderts. Dieses Bild ist in Stil und Ausführung eng mit dem Antwerpener Maler Frans Floris (1519/20-1570) verbunden. Floris, der von 1541 bis 1547 in Rom lebte, galt unter den nordischen Malern als einer der besten Vertreter des römischen Stils. Die robusten und skulpturalen Figuren des vorliegenden Werks spiegeln offensichtlich Floris´ monumentalen Stil wider, der auf seiner Vertrautheit mit den Werken berühmter italienischer Meister wie Raffael beruht, dessen Fresko zu diesem Thema im Vatikan er möglicherweise gesehen hat. Einige der Kopftypen, insbesondere die der Frauen im Vordergrund, erinnern an Werke von Floris, die in die 1550er und 1560er Jahre datiert werden können, wie z. B. eines, das am 16. Mai 1996 bei Sotheby´s in New York verkauft wurde (Los 189), und ein anderes, das am 23. Januar 2004 bei Christie´s in New York verkauft wurde (Los 18). Provenienz: Christie‘s, London, 25. LOT UND SEINE TÖCHTER Öl auf Holz. 76,5 x 107,5 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Dargestellt wird eine Szene aus dem Alten Testament: Nach der Rettung aus dem brennenden Sodom und Gomorra war Lot mit seinen beiden Töchtern ins Gebirge geflüchtet. Aus Sorge um fehlende Nachkommen und in Ermangelung fehlender Ehemänner wussten sich die beiden Frauen nicht anders zu helfen als ihrem Vater Wein einzuflößen und ihn zu verführen. Auf dem Gemälde sind auf der linken Seite die drei Figuren zu sehen, von denen linksseitig eine weiße Decke auf einem Felsblock liegt, auf welcher sich Brot, ein Messer und eine Zinnschale mit Früchten befinden. Im Zentrum der am Boden auf einem roten Tuch sitzende graubärtige Vater, zärtlich umarmt von seiner Tochter in elegantem, grün glänzendem Kleid mit Haarschmuck, die versucht ihn zu verführen. Er hält in seiner erhobenen rechten Hand eine goldene Tazza, die von der hinter ihnen stehenden zweiten Tochter, in leicht durchsichtigem rosafarbenem Gewand, mit Wein aus einem Krug gefüllt wird. Im Hintergrund rechts, eingebettet von zwei alten Baumstämmen, fällt der Blick in die Ferne mit den brennenden Städten mit leuchtenden hohen gelben und orangefarbenen Flammen und aufsteigendem Rauch und Qualm. Malerei, bei der die großfigurige Darstellung der Verführung des Lot im Vordergrund steht. Diese Bibelszene wurde von dem Künstler und seinem Umkreis, sowie von vielen anderen Künstlern seiner Zeit und Nachfolgern dargestellt. Teils rest.
