    Est: $5,000 - $6,000

Arnoux Florexil (Haitian, 20th c.), Ceremony by a River, c. 1978, Oil on masonite, 15" x 18" framed 15 3/4" x 18 3/4 Illustrated/Exhibited: Allegories of Haitian Life, From the Collection of Jonathan Demme, Bass Museum 2006, page 72. From Bass Museum description: A houngan or Vodou priest carries a machete in this Vodou ceremony where a bull, a goat and a baby calf are about to be sacrificed. The mood is celebratory with a crowd in the background. A woman holding a rooster appears to be possessed. She is held by someone so as not to lose her footing. The flower-strewn river provides the serene setting of this daylight event, a common occurrence in the Haitian countryside.
