Pedro (1897) Flores Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

Pedro Flores Garcia (Murcia, 1897 - Paris, 1967) was a painter of the Region of Murcia, Spain.

He was born in Murcia on February 5, 1897, in a humble family. During his childhood he studied at a Marist school and the Jesuit school, but at ten years old began working as an apprentice in a decorative paint shop. In 1908 he began attending classes at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country and then continued in the Art's school. Later, he began working in a lithographic factory with Luis Garay where he learned some photographic techniques. He used photographs taken near the orchards of Murcia as inspiration. He soon obtained several awards with his paintings in 1927 and obtained a great appreciation of criticism in the exhibition conducted by Ramón Gaya and Luis Garay in Galeries Dalmau Barcelona.

PEDRO FLORES GARCÍA (Murcia, 1897 - Paris, 1967). "Urban scene". Watercolor and gouache on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 55 x 42 cm; 78 x 61 cm (passe-partout). Considered today as one of the great painters of the School of Paris, Pedro Flores began his training as an apprentice in a decorative painting workshop, participating in the decoration of the Teatro Circo Villar and the cafés Moderno and El Sol. In 1908 he began to attend classes at the Academy of Fine Arts of the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, and some time later he continued his studies at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. After finishing his studies, Flores began his professional activity working with José Garay in a lithographic workshop. During these years he also learned photographic techniques and worked retouching photographs. In 1927 he achieves an important recognition from the critics in the exhibition he holds together with Gaya and Garay in the Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona. He also held individual exhibitions. In 1928 he obtains a grant from the Diputación to travel to Paris, where he settles until 1933. There he exhibits, again with Garay and Gaya, in the famous Galerie des Quatre Chemins. During these years he participated, with the Society of Iberian Artists, in their exhibitions in Copenhagen, Berlin and Paris. He also participated, in 1937, in the International Exhibition of Paris. When he returned from France, his work was exhibited in the Hall of Honor of the Salon d'Automne in the capital, along with renowned artists such as Picasso and Solana. Later he moves to Barcelona, and exhibits again in the Dalmau Galleries, this time individually. In Barcelona he also worked as a drawing teacher at the Balmes Institute until 1939. At the end of the Civil War he returned to France and joined the so-called Spanish School of Paris, which also included Picasso, Ginés Parra, Francisco Bores and Antoni Clavé, among others. Flores set up his studio in Montparnasse, and at this time he began his period of maturity, marked by an incessant creation of works of great variety: illustrations that appeared in various publications, tapestry cartoons for the Gobelins factory and for the London firm Ascher, scenographies for the National Theater of the Park in Brussels and for the Paris Opera... and also numerous oil paintings, a technique he never abandoned. In 1962 he returned temporarily to his native Murcia to decorate the dome of the Fuensanta Sanctuary. Pedro Flores is currently represented at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Museo Nacional de Prague, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Céret and many others.

Pedro Flores (1897-1967) Signed Oil Painting

    Est: $500 - $1,000

Pedro Flores (Mexico, Spain, 1897-1960) signed oil painting. Excellent condition. Measures 18 in x 10.5 in painting and 23 in x 15.5 in x 1.25 in frame. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. We gladly will give shipping estimates prior to auction. Please make this request at least 24 hours prior to auction for our shipping department to respond.
