"LA CHUNGA" MICAELA FLORES AMAYA (Marseille, 1938)- Set of five photographs by Micaela Flores Amaya. Provenance: Private Collection Antonio Orzaez (1933-2021). With stamps of the photographers Guillen (Madrid) and Alfredo Benito guijarro (Madrid). One of the photographs shows traces of humidity and wrinkles. Measurements: 24 x 18 cm (x5). This set belongs to the personal collection of Antoni Orzaez, the artists' photographer. His work at the Sala Gaspar led him to capture and get to know the lives of many artists who are essential to the history of art. In many cases his closeness with them turned into friendship, as for example with La Chunga, who personally gave him many works, dedicating them to him with great affection. Her parents were Andalusian gypsies living in France when she was born. At the age of one year the family returned to Spain, settling in Barcelona. At a very young age she began to dance in "ca la Rosita", a well known Bodega del Parallel due to the parties and open-air dances that took place there. As she grew up she continued to dance in different bars in her neighbourhood in Barcelona. It was there that she was discovered by Paco Rebés, in one of his improvised street performances. He became her godfather and protector, promoting her as a renowned dancer and taking her under the tutelage of the best instructor of the moment in Barcelona. Pastora Imperio hired her in 1956 as a dancer and, thanks to Ava Gardner, she appeared in two Hollywood films. The impresario Sullivan presented her in Las Vegas, she took part in several American television programmes and performed in New York and Mexico. Since then, she has toured the world and appeared in several films such as La cogida y la muerte, and was the artistic muse of writers such as Blas de Otero, Rafael Alberti, José Manuel Caballero Bonald and León Felipe, and of several painters such as Picasso, Dalí and Francisco Rebés, who catapulted her as an attractive figure for intellectuals. It was he who encouraged her to paint and exhibited her naïf-style works in cities such as Paris and Madrid. An example of her characteristic style is this piece, in which a dancing woman can be seen in the centre of the composition, gazing at the viewer with wide eyes, challenging him and at the same time attracting him to her.
