        EDUARD FLO GUITART (Badalona 1881-Barcelona, 1958). "Behind the window". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 88 x 56 cm; 110 x 77 cm (frame). In this piece the author, who was for most of his work a painter of the human figure, especially portraits, although he also painted landscapes and still lifes, always remained faithful to expressive forms which had their roots in 19th century realist painting. Flò's work, in a naturalistic style, is marked by the influence of his years at the La Llotja art school in Barcelona and his apprenticeship at Ricard Martí's academy, which, once again, led him to isolate himself from the artistic milieux of the modernist Barcelona of Nonell, Rusiñol, Mir and Picasso. He disconnected from the Barcelona art world and ignored the different trends of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He produced simple works, with simple themes and compositions: landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, still lifes. He is particularly interested in the human figure and shows an excellent knowledge of the human body. Charcoal, pencil and oil are the predominant techniques in his work, avoiding large formats and never seeking triangular or diagonal outlines in his still lifes.

        Oil on canvas. Signed. On the reverse, remains of a label of the frame shop Al Bruch (?). With period frame in moulded and gilded wood. Attached is a period photograph of "Photo-Studio Areñas" (16 x 11.2 cm photo; 28.5 x 18.6 cm cardboard support), which was the basis for the oil portrait. Miquel Bayona Durán (Sabadell, 1874 - Barcelona, 1932) was a prominent art collector of the first third of the 19th century. Self-taught, he progressed socially and professionally, from his first job at the age of 12 as a bellboy in Banca Marsans, until becoming a banker and shareholder in the same institution. With a restless and cosmopolitan spirit, he travelled all over Europe and practised various sports (such as cycling, boxing, fencing and stick defence). In his day, his great love for art was well known, especially among art galleries in Barcelona. Another portrait of this model as a young man, painted by Francisco Sans Castaño, is offered in this auction.
