FANNY LAURENT FLEURY, 1848 – 1920/40

PORTRAIT EINES MÄDCHEN AM KIRSCHBAUM Öl auf Leinwand. 54,7 x 38 cm. Rechts unten signiert. In geschnitztem dekorativen Rahmen. Im Schatten zweier großer Kirschbäume steht ein junges Mädchen an einem sonnigen Frühlingstag. Die einfache, aber gepflegte Kleidung sowie der strenge und ehrliche Blick auf den Betrachter vermitteln eine ruhige, sanfte und stille Atmosphäre. Mit den Händen greift sie nach einem Ast des Kirschbaums, vielleicht um die blühenden Blumen zu pflücken oder zu riechen. Der Hintergrund öffnet sich mit einer weiten Perspektive auf die Felder und Wiesen der französischen Landschaft. Fleurys Portraits und Genrebilder sind im Allgemeinen realistisch und gelegentlich auch romantisch, aber besonders hervorstechend sind die Kompositionen, die – wie diese – auf sorgfältig durchdachten Farbharmonien basieren. Das vorliegende Bild ist ein ruhiges Bild, in dem das Subjekt zum Vorwand für das Zusammenspiel von Grünen-, Mauve- und Rosatönen wird. Die Geste und Spontaneität des dargestellten Mädchens unterstreichen die Tatsache, dass es sich nicht um ein Portrait im Sinne eines repräsentativen Bildes, sondern um eine dekorative Gestaltung handelt, die sich an den Arbeiten von Edouard Manet orientiert. Married at a young age, she is best known under her married name of Fanny Fleury. She exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1869 and 1889, and developed a reputation as a talented portraitist and painter of figure studies. She also painted genre scenes and still lifes, which she exhibited at the Salons of Saint-Etienne and Dijon. Fleury received an honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Examples of her work are in a number of important collections including the museums of Beziers (l' abri de Varech) and Cette (Le repos du modele).
