Unframed, loose, in folio. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4", mucilage glue on back, bend lower right corner, dimple at his shoulder. Fleischmann was a preeminent portrait photographer of the 20th century. Gustav Heinrich Ernst Martin Wilhelm Furtwängler was a German conductor and composer, considered to be Hitler's favorite, Maestro of the Berliner Philharmoniker 1939-45.

Since then her career to triumph began, but quite contrary to the usual ideas, she did not take advantage of it, except in one case where she played in one of the Austrian Movie Productions. Miss Kiesler is not yet seventeen years old. After studying with Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, whose "rhythmic gymnastics" was formative for the development of modern dance, Gertrud Falke (1890–1984) founded her own school in Hamburg in 1913. She became famous through joint performances with her sister Ursula and through her collaboration with Mary Wigman on the project of a dance school at the Dresden Opera. Born in Vienna, Tilly Losch (1903–1975) became a solo dancer at the Vienna State Opera in 1924, choreographed for the Salzburg Festival and performed with numerous protagonists of modern dance, such as Harald Kreutzberg. From the late 1920s, she gave guest performances in London and New York, turned to acting and appeared in Hollywood films. The 1930s saw her brief marriage to the multimillionaire and patron Edward James, an affair with Lotte Lenya and her marriage to a British Earl. XII. 1918 depicted in catalogue Trude Fleischmann 2011, p. 15 ESTIMATE °€ 6000 - 12000 STARTING PRICE °€ 6000 The Austrian-American photographer Trude Fleischmann From 1913 to 1916 she completed training at the Graphic Training and Research Institute in Vienna. After a short internship with Madame d'Ora, she completed her professional training in Hermann Schieberth's studio from 1916 to 1919. In 1920 she opened her own studio. There she took photographs of numerous well-known personalities from society, art and culture, including Peter Altenberg, Gustinus Ambrosi, Alban Berg, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Karl Kraus, Hedy Lamarr, Adolf Loos, Tilly Losch, Alfred Polgar, Max Reinhardt, Thimig, Hilde Wagener , Bruno Walter, Paula Wessely, Grete Wiesenthal and Stefan Zweig. Dance and nude recordings were also made. The nude photographs of the dancer Claire Bauroff became famous. Fleischmann's photographs were printed in all common magazines: Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, Die Bühne, Die Dame, Moderne Welt, Wiener Bilder, Wiener Magazin, Wiener Mode. After the annexation, Fleischmann managed to escape via Paris and London to New York in 1938 with the help of the photographer Marion Post Wolcott, with whose sister Helen she had studied in Vienna. In 1940 she opened a photography studio in Manhattan. In NY she photographed well-known artists and intellectuals, including Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, Albert Einstein, Otto von Habsburg, Oskar Kokoschka, Lotte Lehmann and Arturo Toscanini. In 1969 Fleischmann retired from professional life and moved to Lugano. In 1988 she returned to the USA. Many photographs are in renowned collections: MoMA, New York Public Library, Leo Baeck Institute, Getty Museum in L.A. Vienna Museum, the Theatermuseum Vienna and the Photographis Collection of Bank Austria. Peter Altenberg (actually Richard Engländer) attended the Akademisches Gymnasium in Vienna and then attended legal and medical lectures at the university. He became a legendary figure through his eccentric lifestyle and as a constant guest at renowned coffee houses (Central, Herrenhof). From 1892 he wrote down his observations, ideas and criticisms, and in 1896 his first book “How I see it” was published. Altenberg is one of the main representatives of literary impressionism in Vienna. With his friend Adolf Loos he published the magazine "Die Kunst" in 1903/1904 and worked on the "Wiener Rundschau", "Simplicissimus" and "Jugend". He also had a close friendship with Karl Kraus. Altenberg, Loos and Kraus were referred to as "the better Triple Alliance" or the "intellectual triumvirate of Vienna". Altenberg did not live in his own apartment, but preferred to stay with friends or in hotels. Karl Kraus and Egon Friedell honored Altenberg after his death by publishing selected works, and Alfred Polgar edited the "Bequest". The Vienna Library in the town hall has Altenberg's manuscripts, and the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna has memorabilia and photos. Trude Fleischmann eröffnete 1920 ein Atelier in der Wiener Ebendorferstraße, wo sie vor allem Prominenz aus Kunst und Kultur porträtierte. Ein Großteil ihrer Kundschaft für Gesellschaftsporträts stammte aus den Bereichen Theater, Musik und Tanz. Ihre Aktaufnahmen sind auch vor dem Hintergrund der neuen Tanzbewegung, der lebensreformerischen Freikörperkultur sowie einem neuen weiblichen Selbstverständnis zu sehen. Als die angebotene Aufnahme 2011 anlässlich einer umfassenden Einzelausstellung gezeigt (und eine weitere aus derselben Serie prominent am Katalogcover) veröffentlicht wurde, bezeichnete man die Dargestellte als Claire Bauroff, mit der Trude Fleischmann einige Jahre zuvor ebenfalls eine Aktserie fotografiert hatte. Mittlerweile konnten die beiden Tänzerinnen – trotz der Ähnlichkeit in Statur und Posen – identifiziert und in den jeweiligen Aufnahmen unterschieden werden. When Trude Fleischmann opened her studio in 1920 in Vienna’s Ebendorferstraße, she portrayed many celebrities from the arts and culture. A large part of her clients for society portraits came from the fields of theatre, music and dance. Her nudes can also be seen in the context of the new dance movement, the life-reforming nudism culture and a new female self-conciousness. When the offered photograph was shown in 2011 on the occasion of a comprehensive solo exhibition (and another from the same series was published prominently on the catalogue cover), the sitter was referred to as Claire Bauroff, with whom Trude Fleischmann had also photographed a nude series a few years earlier. In the meantime, the two dancers – despite the similarity in stature and poses – could be identified and distinguished in the respective photographs.
