Donald M. Flather 1903 - 1990 Canadian oil on board The Green Growler of Pond Inlet 35 3/4 x 48 1/2 inches 90.8 x 123.2 centimeters signed and dated 1981 and on verso signed, titled and dated Provenance:Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, May 10, 2000, lot 182 Private Collection, USA Inscribed on verso by the artist: "This iceberg entered Pond Inlet from Greenland three years before, and much larger than at present. The character of its ice revealed its birthplace. It moved around Pond Inlet under the caprice of winds and tides. In its appearance here it had been grounded for over three years. The sunshine had reduced its above-water volume. The cold water did not affect the submerged part much. It was about one mile west of the Shaw boat-launching beach and about 800 yards offshore to the north. A weighted depth line indicated 195 feet of water. The launching beach is another mile west of the centre of Pond Inlet village. A good truck road connects the two places. The iron-brown hills to the north form the south shore of Bylot Island with three large glaciers reaching tide-water. Bylot was Baffin's excellent navigator." The term "growler" refers to a piece of glacier ice, often transparent, appearing green or almost black. This glacier is an extraordinary sculpted shape, resembling an Arctic cathedral, a remarkable subject for this exceptional painting by Donald Flather.

Donald M. Flather 1903 - 1990 Canadian oil on board Icebergs II 27 x 36 inches 68.6 x 91.4 centimeters on verso titled and certified by the executor of the estate Provenance:Estate of the Artist Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, November 14, 2002, lot 158 Private Collection, USA Donald Flather was born in London, England and emigrated with his parents to Shuswap Lake in British Columbia, where they lived on an orchard. In his twenties, Flather moved to Vancouver, studying at the University of British Columbia. He taught biology and science at various Vancouver high schools, ultimately rising to vice-principal of King George High School. Throughout his time as an educator, he painted striking landscape works of British Columbia, but also explored across the country through the Northwest Territories, Baffin Island, the Prairies, Ontario and the Maritimes. He took many photographs on his travels, which he would refer to while in the studio, as with this iconic Arctic image. He was a founding member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, serving as its national treasurer and exhibiting in their shows. Through this organization he came into contact with fellow founder Lawren Harris, who had arrived in Vancouver in 1940. Harris was well known for his Arctic works, and his influence can be seen in Icebergs II with its bold composition, unusual cloud formations, rich blue palette and brilliant light.

Donald M. Flather 1903 - 1990 Canadian oil on canvas on board Mount Sir Donald 36 x 44 inches 91.4 x 111.7 centimeters signed Provenance:Estate of the Artist Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, November 14, 2002, lot 159 Private Collection, USA Mount Sir Donald is a peak in the Rogers Pass area of British Columbia. It is the most prominent summit in the Selkirk Mountains, and its good rock quality and classic Matterhorn shape make it a favourite of alpine rock climbers. This striking peak attracted both Canadian artists such as Thomas Mower Martin and Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith, who came to British Columbia in the late 1800s on the newly built Canadian Pacific Railway, and well-known American painters such as Albert Bierstadt of the Hudson River School. All three did fine canvases of this subject. Donald Flather's modern depiction of Mount Sir Donald has great clarity of atmosphere, a bright, light-filled palette and a fine eye for form. The repeated split planes in the rocks and the striations of the glacial carvings on its surface make it look as though the mountain peak were chiseled by a sculptor. There are echoes of the work of both W.P. Weston and the Group of Seven's Lawren Harris in Mount Sir Donald, which is one of Flather's most stunning mountain landscapes.

Flather 1903 - 1990 Canadian oil on board Copper Island 36 x 48 inches 91.4 x 121.9 centimeters signed and on verso inscribed variously Provenance:Estate of the Artist Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, May 2, 2002, lot 58 Private Collection, USA Born in London, England, Donald Flather emigrated with his parents to Shuswap Lake in British Columbia, where his love of landscape began. Flather moved to Vancouver in his twenties and, after his education at the University of British Columbia, taught biology and science at various Vancouver high schools, rising to vice-principal of King George High School. Throughout his time as an educator, he continued to paint landscape works and was a founding member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, serving as its national treasurer and exhibiting in their shows. Through this organization he would have come into contact with Lawren Harris, who had arrived in Vancouver in 1940, and certainly the influence of Harris's painting can be seen in bold works such as Copper Island with its dramatic light and clear atmosphere. After his retirement in 1968, Flather devoted himself full time to his painting, exploring the British Columbia interior and coast, photographing scenes for reference for future paintings.

Donald M. Flather 1903 - 1990 Canadian oil on panel Mt. Garibaldi 45 x 33 inches 114.3 x 83.8 centimeters signed and on verso titled and inscribed variously Provenance:Estate of the Artist Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, November 9, 2000, lot 208 Private Collection, USA Mt. Garibaldi has been the subject of extraordinary artists who have lived in British Columbia, such as the Group of Seven painter Frederick Varley who explored and sketched it extensively in 1927 and 1929. The dramatic mountain paintings of W.P. Weston, who also painted Garibaldi, come to mind when viewing this striking depiction of this iconic mountain by Donald Flather. Mt. Garibaldi is a stratovolcano near Squamish, 50 miles north of Vancouver. One of the most well-recognized peaks in the South Coast range, it is the only major Pleistocene epoch volcano in North America to have formed on a glacier. Flather depicts it rising in layers, dwarfing the dock at its base, its forested flanks and glacial fields frosted with snow. The atmosphere is fresh and the palette is bright, as Flather contrasts the snow with cobalt blue ocean and turquoise sky. Mt. Garibaldi's immensity and concealed power is clearly sensed in this bold painting.
