    Oct. 22, 2024

Original Vintage Trains and Globes Poster 1990 Hand Signed by Pierre Fix-Masseau

    Est: $500 - $800

Train and Globes is a 1990 print by art deco artist Pierre Fix Masseau. The artwork was a unique design commissioned for a marketing event in 1990. The event had a "global networking" theme which Fix Masseau incorporated into his design in the form of the two world globes- a special request by commission. The globes appear prominently above the train. The train itself was a self-reference to Fix Masseau's famous Exactitude poster from 1932. The marketing event was unfortunately cancelled and as a result very few prints remain in existence. This print has been individually hand-signed in pencil by Fix Masseau. Pierre Fix-Masseau (1904-1995) was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. This experience greatly impacted Fix-Masseau, who continued to work within the Art Deco style for the remainder of his long career. Cassandre's interest in foreshortening, heightened focal points, and flattened planes can be seen in Fix-Masseau's works. Fix-Masseau combined Cassandre's influence with his own mastery of perspective and intricate detail to create his own, distinctive style. Fix-Masseau is best remembered for his posters featuring railway and automotive themes. The artwork's composition features strong diagonals to create a dynamic image. Fix-Masseau designed this poster towards the end of his life at the age of 85. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster was printed on heavyweight paper and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

PIERRE FIX-MASSEAU (1905-1994) EXACTITUDE. 1932. 39½x24½ inches, 100½x62¼ cm. Edita, Paris. Condition A: small unobtrusive tears at top edge. Paper. In one of the classic railroad images to emerge from the Art Deco era, Fix-Masseau uses the triangle of the station roof, the circle and rectangle at the front of the train and the squares on the platform to create a powerful geometric image. Most often compared to Cassandre's Nord Express in its use of perspective, Fix-Masseau captures an entirely different element of train travel than is featured in Cassandre's romanticized image - punctuality. Using warm colors and a prominent display of the station clock as the train pulls in, the artist emphasizes his message - written across the top of the poster in a typeface that is as streamlined as the design of the train itself. Original 1989 Pierre Fix Masseau Poster for Delahaye Hand Signed by the artist

    Est: $700 - $1,000

Delahaye is a 1989 poster by Pierre Fix-Masseau. The artwork features the classic 1937 Delahaye model 135 M amidst the backdrop of the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo. This poster commemorates the 1937 Monte-Carlo Rally, at which a competition version of the car won first place. The specific model in this poster was produced only in 1937, and it is believed less than 30 examples were ever made. It is not uncommon for this car to sell for upwards of six million dollars when it appears at auction today. Delahaye was in business from 1894 - 1954, and is heralded for creating some of the most beautiful (and now collective and expensive) cars of all time. This poster perfectly captures the elegance of not only the Delahaye car, but the lifestyle of those who are able to own and drive one. The couple enter their luxury car after an evening at one of the most famous casinos in one of the most elite locations in the world, their clothing further underlining their status. This is an elegant image that oozes of luxury and style. Pierre Fix-Masseau (1905-1994) was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. PIERRE FIX-MASSEAU (1905-1994) EXACTITUDE. 1932. 39 1/2x24 1/2 inches, 100 1/2x62 1/4 cm.

PIERRE FIX-MASSEAU (1905-1994) LE MONT ST. MICHEL. 1937. 40x24 1/2 inches, 101 1/2x62 1/4 cm. Edita, Paris. Condition B+: minor repaired tears in margins; archival tape over skinning in bottom margin at corners; minor creases and light stains in margins and image. Pierre Fix-Masseau was the son of French sculptor Pierre Félix Masseau, and a student of A.M. Cassandre. Fix-Masseau gleaned some of the Art Deco influences of Cassandre, especially in his portrayals of locomotives and automobiles, and adapted these elements into his own style of poster design. In this image of Mont St. Michel, the artist departs from geometric train posters like his iconic Exactitude, and utilizes the diagonal of the seagull to add movement and drama to an otherwise serene setting. This piece features the landscape of Mont St. Michel, the proclaimed "Wonder of the West," floating in the center of the poster, mirrored by its reflection in the bay. While the trope of a flying seagull as a design element in travel posters pre-dates this poster, Fix-Masseau clearly created an iconic image worthy of imitation; in Ben Nason's Rhode Island poster for the New Haven Railroad circa 1945, a nearly identical seagull cuts across the uncannily similar backdrop of a towering church steeple. In 1950, Roger Couillard created a poster White Empress to Europe, featuring a gull clearly influenced by Fix-Masseau's bird. Chemins de Fer 106, Fix-Masseau p. 11 (var).

Original 1989 Pierre Fix Masseau Poster for Delahaye Hand Signed by the artist

    Est: $750 - $1,200
