        Est: $600 - $800

DANIEL FITZPATRICK (1891-1969) "Forward St. Louis!" Cartoon about funding for the symphony, museums, zoos and similar institutions, c. 1929. Black crayon on board. 508x400 mm; 20x15 3/4 inches. Inscribed and signed in lower right image, "To Mr. Frank Crunden who knows good left-handed fiddling when he sees it. D.R.F. - Fitzpatrick." The piece was acquired with other Fitzpatrick cartoons of the same apparent age and in the same style-- one of which was precisely dated to 1929 and had a label from a St. Louis Post-Dispatch program of the time, by which they sold art originals to readers. It is very likely that this cartoon dates to the same year, and may have been purchased through the same program. Fitzpatrick won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work, the first in 1926, not long before this cartoon was most likely made.

Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick (1891 - 1969) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and an editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Dispatch from 1913 to 1958. During the 1930s, Fitzpatrick was one of the first American cartoonists to warn of the dangers of Fascism in Europe. Stephen Hess argued that Fitzpatrick played a significant role in changing American public opinion on Nazi Germany: "Fitzpatrick, one of the masters in the use of symbolism, transformed Nazi Germany's swastika into a horrific death machine. As Hitler's armies marched across Europe, he used his symbol repeatedly to challenge America to rethink their isolationist stand and enter the war against Germany. H Signed Political Cartoon, "Fitzpatrick", 17-1/2 x 20 original editorial cartoon on artboard captioned "The New Brannan Two-Way Job." depicts farmer harvesting grain. He is emptying grain into two bags: Farm Subsidy and Lower Consumer Prices. Art is also inscribed "For Secretary Brannan, D.R. Fitzpatrick." Minor wear, very good condition.
