        Est: €3,000 - €4,000

John Anster Fitzgerald (1832-1906) Crows and Fairies,  signed lower left, ‘J. A. Fitzgerald’ In this wonderfully imaginative watercolour, John Anster Fitzgerald depicts a flock of black crows being teased by fairies and sprites. A fantasy frog dances in front of one bird, while a winged goblin flutters above another discomfited crow. Other birds are being danced upon, and put to flight by the ferocious winged sprites. Painted with verve and spirit, this battle between sprites and birds is characteristic of an artist who was dubbed ‘Fairy Fitzgerald’. The painter of these fantastic and hallucinatory images of birds, sprites and fairies, John Anster Fitzgerald was born in London in 1832 (although some accounts give his date of birth as 1819). The son of the poet William Thomas Fitzgerald, his grandfather was Irish, and there is a strong resonance of Irish folk beliefs evident in his work. As an artist he seems to have been largely self-taught, but became celebrated for elaborate and highly-coloured paintings such as The Death of the Fairy Queen, Cock Robin defending his nest, The Chase of the White Mouse and The Fairy’s Barque, He was also famous for his illustration work, and the late 1850’s his drawings of fairies were reproduced in the Christmas edition of the Illustrated London News. Fitzgerald exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, and also showed at the Royal Watercolour Society. The last painting he exhibited at the RA was a depiction of Alice in Wonderland. In 1849, he married Mary Ann Barr and they had at least six children. He was a long-time member of the Langham Sketching Club, founded in 1838, but left in 1898 to join the Savage Club. In receipt of a pension from the Royal Academy, Fitzgerald died in 1906.

JOHN ANSTER FITZGERALD (BRITISH 1832-1906)SNOWY MISCHIEFwatercolour and bodycolour 34.5 x 27cm (13½ x 10½ in.)Provenance:The artist's family and by descentBy the 1850's Fitzgerald ushered in a new phase in fairy painting. `He removed the theatrical overtones of the subject, which had been predominant in the 1840's, opting instead to show the fairies in a rustic setting, co-existing with other woodland creatures.' (I. Zaczek, Fairy Art , 2005, p.50). The animals often appear very static which may show a debt to taxidermy and the work of the photographer J. D. Llewelyn (1810-1862) who created imaginary tableau of stuffed animals in a natural setting. The fairies are sometimes seen as benign creatures who are at-one with the animals, while others show conflict, or in this case a certain amount of teasing with snowballs and twigs. Like The Enchanted Forrest (Circa 1860) the present picture is set on the edges of fairyland. The dog has come to the edge of the natural world where the fairies' dwell behind a bramble patch. The spire of a church and a cluster of cottages can be seen in the distance, symbolising the encroachment of human activity on fairyland.

FITZGERALD, John Anster (1819-1906). Titania and the changeling child - A Midsummer Night's Dream. Pencil, watercolor and bodycolor. c. late 19th century. 11 1/4” x 17 3/4” visible, 18” x 24 1/2” framed. John Anster Christian Fitzgerald was a Victorian era fairy painter and portrait artist. He was nicknamed "Fairy Fitzgerald" for his main genre. Many of his fairy paintings are dark and contain images of ghouls, demons, and references to drug use; his work has been compared to the surreal nightmare-scapes of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel.

Independence—Portrait of a man leaning on a fence Oil on canvas (unlined) Signed and dated ‘J.A. Fitzgerald 1846’ Signed and inscribed with title on the reverse of the frame Exhibited at The Royal Academy, 1846, No.104, ‘Independence’ Enclosed in original gilt frame John Austen Fitzgerald (English, 1832-1906) was born in London, the son of the poet, William Thomas Fitzgerald (1759-1829). His Irish grandfather was Colonel John Austen Fitzgerald (c.1691-1751). Fitzgerald began his artistic studies at the Maddox Street Sketching Club. His early works were portraits and genre scenes, some painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style. He is best known for his highly imaginative fairy scenes, which earned him the sobriquet, "Fairy Fitzgerald". These subjects were painted in oil and watercolour. Fitzgerald exhibited thirty-three works at The Royal Academy between 1845 and 1902, twenty-seven at the British Institution, and sixty-two at Suffolk Street. Works by Fitzgerald can be seen at the Guildhall Art Gallery, London; the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
