    • Harriett Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Three Children and Houses in Danville, circa 1938, oil on canvas
      Sep. 16, 2023

Harriett Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Three Children and Houses in Danville, circa 1938, oil on canvas

      Est: $800 - $1,000

Harriett Fitzgerald New York, (1904-1984) Three Children and Houses in Danville, circa 1938 oil on canvas Harriet Fitzgerald learned the painter's craft in Virginia, New York and Europe before returning home to paint during the time of the Great Depression. As a 20th c. female humanist painter, she focused on people in a direct, straight-forward and truth-seeking fashion. Her work is mostly about individuals, often women and children; and she saw art as a manifestation of their daily lives and of their feelings and expressions. As a female she had access to all kinds of models including nannies, brides, working women, housewives, and children. A well-known university scholarship has been set up in Fitzgerald's name, awarded annually to a female art student at a women's college. This portrait is set in the countryside at the time of the Great Depression next to some tall grasses and a hamlet of modest houses located outside Danville, Virginia. The painting focuses on three barefoot African American children: an older girl wearing a summery white dress who is watching over a male toddler whose hand she holds (wearing blue overalls) and a slightly older little girl (wearing a pink dress). They all stand outside next to some tall grasses as if they were taking a break, posing for us for a brief moment while on a walk around the outskirt of the house, and both of the girls look directly at us as the viewer. unsigned, early labels on the reverse, framed Provenance: Estate of Raymond Keith Kissee

    • Harriett Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Young Woman with Baby, 1932, oil on canvas

Harriett Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Young Woman with Baby, 1932, oil on canvas

      Est: $500 - $800

Harriett Fitzgerald New York, (1904-1984) Young Woman with Baby, 1932 oil on canvas Harriet Fitzgerald learned the painter's craft in Virginia, New York and Europe before returning home to paint during the time of the Great Depression. This painting, _Young Woman with Baby_, is a portrait of an infant boy presumably being held by his mother. Wearing some makeup and sporting finely coiffed hair, his mother watches him closely, looking straight down on him and gently holding him still on her lap as he turns toward the viewer while wiggling around. She wears a blue dress with a crisp white collar and sleeves while the boy wears a fancy white baby outfit and matching shoes. It is not surprising that the mother looks somber and serious; the portrait is signed and dated '1932' so it was created in the midst of the Great Depression. The pastel tonalities of the walls help create an atmosphere of peace and relaxation, and although the painting contains no particular religious attributes, any painting of a young mother holding her infant son is of course an indirect reference to many thousands of paintings of Mary and Baby Jesus. signed and dated lower left, framed. • Harriet Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Fuller and Mammy, 1939, oil on canvas
      Sep. 16, 2023

Harriet Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Fuller and Mammy, 1939, oil on canvas

      Est: $500 - $700

Harriet Fitzgerald New York, (1904-1984) Fuller and Mammy, 1939 oil on canvas Harriet Fitzgerald learned the painter's craft in Virginia, New York and Europe before returning home to paint during the time of the Great Depression. This painting, called _Fuller and Mammy_, is a portrait of a white infant boy "Fuller" being held in the arms of his Black nanny called "Mammy," the name for a stereotypical domestic figure of African American origin who often cared for children in white families in the Jim Crow era--which lasted until 1966. The expression on Mammy's face is somber, she doesn't look at the viewer, and she appears to have a lot on her mind. She wears a black and white long-sleeved shirt, a long white apron and a pair of glasses as she gazes down toward Fuller and toward the floor while the boy wears fancy and clean baby clothes as he holds a wooden toy and looks more optimistically out a window from what appears to be an upper-level storey of a home or apartment building. A tree with no leaves seen through a curtain shows us that it might be either early spring or late fall/ winter. The portrait is signed and dated '1939' so it was created after a full decade of economic depression (just at the end of the Great Depression) and just before World War II broke out--or perhaps it was painted right after war broke out in September 1939. initialed and dated upper left, framed. • Harriet Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Florence Henderson Sewing, 1944, oil on canvas

Harriet Fitzgerald, New York (1904-1984), Florence Henderson Sewing, 1944, oil on canvas

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Harriet Fitzgerald New York, (1904-1984) Florence Henderson Sewing, 1944 oil on canvas Harriet Fitzgerald learned the painter's craft in Virginia, New York and Europe before returning home to paint during the time of the Great Depression. Here Fitzgerald has captured an American seamstress at work in November 1944--a few months after D-Day and at a time when WWII remained in full tilt. 1944 saw the deaths of thousands of people around the world and the total destruction of much of human civilization. The lady is sitting down on a stool and intently sewing: she is possibly repairing a collar or sewing a button back onto a white shirt that drapes across her lap. She has nothing to do with the viewer. The woman wears a classic 1940s grey 2-piece dress suit with boxy shoulders (also called a Victory Suit or a Utility Suit) with the feminine bow of her blouse in full view. Women were needed in the workforce since men were away fighting. And Fitzgerald chose a telling background: a greyish white scene of nothing--an eerie sort of representation of 1944 as well. Even though she probably was no film star, her hairstyle clearly comes straight from those popularized by Hollywood stars of the time including Betty Grable, Anna Neagle, Veronica Lake, Corothy Lamour, Rita Hayworth, Ava Garnder, and so many others. Her hairstyle (and theirs) represented something practical: hair was worn out of the face so that it wouldn't be in the way of work. The woman sitting for her portrait also appears to have flawless skin thanks to her classic 1940s makeup: foundation, powder and a brush of reddish lipstick. signed and dated lower left, framed. • Harriet Fitzgerald, New York , Bride, 1955-56, oil on canvas
      Sep. 16, 2023

Harriet Fitzgerald, New York , Bride, 1955-56, oil on canvas

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Harriet Fitzgerald New York Bride, 1955-56 oil on canvas Harriet Fitzgerald learned the painter's craft in Virginia, New York and Europe before returning home to paint during the time of the Great Depression. This painting focuses on a modest and elegant 1950s bride with an hourglass figure (thanks to having consistently worn corsets), exaggerated with layers of crinoline under her skirt. She was probably around age 20 (the average age for a bride in 1950s America), and possibly marrying a 23 year-old man (the average age for an American groom) who, if pictured next to her, would have probably been sporting a black tuxedo and bowtie. Her choice of a shiny satin dress was likely inspired by some of the fashions worn by the famous brides of her day (e.g. Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe). She does not gaze at the viewer but modestly looks slightly down and to the side with a serious expression on her face, carefully documented by Fitzgerald, who captured a young woman on the brink of entering into an entirely new phase of life. After the time of this painting, the bride likely became a homemaker, cooking and cleaning, and dedicating her life to caring for her home, her children and her husband--just like thousands of American women did in her time. signed and dated lower right, framed.
