  • GEORGE FISKE (1835-1918) Views of Yosemite, a suite of 27 photographs. Circa 1884.
    Oct. 31, 2024

GEORGE FISKE (1835-1918) Views of Yosemite, a suite of 27 photographs. Circa 1884.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

GEORGE FISKE (1835-1918) Views of Yosemite, a suite of 27 photographs. Circa 1884. Albumen prints, the images measuring 7½x4¼ inches (19.1x10.8 cm.), and the reverse, the mounts 10x7 inches (25.4x17.8 cm.), all but one with Fiske's credit and number in the negative, and each with a caption in ink, on mount recto. Provenance A California Collection George Fiske worked as an assistant to Carleton Watkins, as well as with Eadweard Muybridge. By 1879, Fiske moved to Yosemite Valley, becoming its first year-round resident photographer. Prophetically, Ansel Adams was given a copy of a book titled In the Heart of the Sierras (by James M. Hutchings, 1888), which persuaded Adams, and by extension his family, to vacation in Yosemite National Park in 1916. Adams implored the Yosemite Park Company to safely store what remained of Fiske's negatives, but tragically they were lost in a fire in 1943. Later Adams would say "Fiske could have been revealed today, I firmly believe, as a top photographer, a top interpretive photographer. I really can't get excited at [Carleton] Watkins and [Eadweard] Muybridge--I do get excited at Fiske. I think he had the better eye." (Paul Hickman & Terence Pitts, George Fiske Yosemite Photographer, 1980)

Heading: Author: Fiske, George Title: Yosemite Falls Place Published: Yosemite National Park Publisher: Date Published: c. 1870's-1880's Description: Albumen print mounted on board. 18.8x11 cm (7½x4¼"); card: 20.3x12.5 cm (8x5"); mat: 35.7x28 cm (14x11"). Signed in negative with Fiske's photograph no. 327. A close friend of Yosemite National Park's first Superintendent Galen Clark, George Fiske (1835-1918) was the official photographer for California's first national park. Fiske's photographs in James Mason Hutchings' In the Heart of the Sierras was the inspiration for Ansel Adams' first visit to Yosemite. In an acerbic moment, Adams weighed in, "I really can't get excited at Watkins and Muybridge – I do get excited at Fiske. I think he had the better eye." (Hickman & Pitts, 1980). Fiske photographs are seldom seen at auction as his legacy was significantly affected by two fires (1904 and 1943) which decimated his archive, the first of which leading to the suicide of the photographer.

  • FISKE, GEORGE (AMERICAN, 1835–1918). EL CAPITAN, YOSEMITE V...
    Nov. 20, 2021

FISKE, GEORGE (AMERICAN, 1835–1918). EL CAPITAN, YOSEMITE V...

    Est: $400 - $600

FISKE, George (American, 1835–1918). El Capitan, Yosemite Valley. Circa 1890. Albumen silver print (7 ¼ x 4 ½”) signed and numbered in the negative, mounted on heavy stock (probably taken from one of the Yosemite commercial photo albums that Fiske produced). A striking view of the world’s largest exposed granite monolith taken from the banks of Ribbon Creek on the north side of Yosemite Valley in what is now Yosemite National Park. This formation was named after a loose Spanish translation (“El Capitan”) of the local Native American name for the cliff (“To–to–kon oo–lah”) by the Mariposa Battalion when they explored the valley in 1851. In 1879, Fiske moved to Yosemite after both apprenticing and working with two early Yosemite photographers, Charles L. Weed and Carleton E. Watkins, becoming the Valleys first year–round resident photographer after a long hiatus in his career. Upon Fiske’s death in 1918, the celebrated American landscape photographer, Ansel Adams, suggested that Fiske’s remaining negatives acquired by the Yosemite Park Company be stored in the Yosemite Museum’s fireproof basement, but his request was ignored and the negatives laid neglected in a sawmill attic which burned in 1943. "If that hadn't happened", said Adams, "Fiske could have been revealed today, I firmly believe, as a top photographer, a top interpretive photographer. I really can’t get excited at [Carleton] Watkins and [Eadweard] Muybridge—I do get excited at Fiske. I think he had the better eye." (Hickman & Pitts, 1980). Adams was unquestionably influenced by the early American photographer’s landscape views; using many of Fiske’s inspirations in his own work when visiting the park for the first time in 1916 (See Ansel Adams’ “El Capitan”, printed 1952).
