    John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury (British, 1748-1825) Rocky landscape with waterfall sepia watercolour h:28 w: 44 cm Provenance: The Hon. Robert Gathorne-Hardy and by descent. It was Constable's friendship with the Bishop of Salisbury, John Fisher, that first brought him to the city. They had met in 1797, when Fisher was rector of the neighbouring village to Constable's birthplace, East Bergholt in Suffolk. Recognising genius when few others did, Fisher became, and remained, a generous patron. Fisher was also responsible for commissioning Constable's Salisbury Cathedral, with Fisher presiding at Constable's wedding.
