          [CIGARETTE LEATHER CARDS]. FISHER, Bud (1885-1954) and HOFFMAN, Hal. A Group of Nine “Pennant” Cartoon Cards. [W. & M. Company, ca. 1910s]. Rare leather pennant-shaped cards with full color humorous cartoons on rectos. Approximately 2 ½” long. Some rubbing, toning, light soiling. Excellent and rare. Fisher is most famous for his “Mutt and Jeff” comic strip.

          Bud (Harry Conway) Fisher (1885 - 1954) "And Now Jeff Knows All About The Value of a Passport" (Mutt And Jeff Daily Comic Strip Art Dated 9-1-1915) Ink & Graphite on Board. Inscribed along top edge in pencil "and now Jeff knows all about the value of a passport - By Bud Fisher / For Release to World / Wednesday, Sept 1 - 1915." Also inscribed along lower edge "Do not engrave for Wheeler (Bell) Syndicate." Fisher was born 3 April, 1884 or 1885 in Chicago, Illinois. He was educated in the Chicago Public Schools prior to attending the University of Chicago. In 1905 he left Chicago for California, where he joined the San Francisco Chronicle. He introduced a regular strip, A. Mutt, on 15 November, 1907, which illustrated racing tips from a gambler, Mr. A. Mutt, and involved Mutt's entire family. A. Mutt, later renamed Mutt and Jeff in 1915, is considered to be the first successful daily comic strip. Fisher was among the first cartoonists to establish that a comic artist could prosper financially and be socially acceptable. Fisher was the world's highest paid cartoonist during the 1920s. Condition Sight condition very good, edges of cartoons show light toning from mat, not examined out of frame.
