Erastus Salisbury Field (American, 1805-1900) Portrait of Hannah Eells Palmer oil on canvas 35 1/4 x 27 inches. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Hannah Eells Palmer (1804-1881) was the fourth of eight children born in Stonington, Connecticut to Abigail Davis and Lemuel Palmer. On February 15, 1824, she married her cousin Paul Smith Palmer (1796 -1875), the son of Revolutionary War general Roswell Saltonstall Palmer, and moved to her new husband's home in Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. According to federal census agricultural schedules, Paul Smith Palmer owned 190 acres of land in Stockbridge, where he raised cattle, sheep, and swine, and cultivated corn and oats, cumulatively valued at $8,363 in 1860.[1] Palmer was purportedly an "honest, upright man and highly esteemed by all who knew him."[2] The couple had nine children, though only three lived to see adulthood. Two of the Palmer children, twins Emma and Charles, were painted along with their mother in another portrait of Hannah Eells Palmer executed by Erastus Salisbury Field during the mid-to-late 1830s. Field painted a pendant portrait of Paul Smith Palmer, and both works are part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The portrait offered here is slightly smaller and was likely painted prior to the pair in Washington, given the expansive breadth of the gigot sleeves and the elaborately curled hairstyle Eells Palmer wore. Sleeves of women's dresses began to widen in the late 1820s and reached an apex between 1830 and 1833, after which their size began to shrink. Schnorr, scattered in-painting, back covered by foam core, ss: 21 3/4" h. x 26 1/2". In Mary Black's introduction to "American Folk Painting," the book she co-authored with Jean Lipman in 1966, she describes four ancestral portraits hanging in the dark staircase of her grandfather's house. They were Erastus Salisbury Field's portraits of Hosea and Sarah Merrill and their son and daughter-in-law, Phillips and Frances Merrill, the paintings offered here. Mrs. Black wrote "I remember them always, but my awareness of them came slowly. Eventually they became personages more real than some of my bearded great-uncles and their frail wives... Often my brother and I would watch them from between the stair rails... it seemed to us that they looked back... As time went by, I began to see the paintings as something more than startlingly realistic portrayals. When I finally became aware that they were not only faithful likenesses, but well-organized compositions that emphasized faces by contrasts and highlighting of costume and gesture, the renaissance of interest in American folk art was well underway."Phillips Merrill (1790-1873) was a farmer and lumberman in western Massachusetts. He and Frances Stanton (1794-1867) were married in 1815. Phillips' father, Hosea, was a Revolutionary War veteran who, according to family tradition, acted as a guard for Major Andre during Andre's imprisonment. Field's portraits of the elder Merrills are now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts.Each oil on canvas, 35 x 28 3/4 inches. Each with printed exhibition labels on the reverse. Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitters to the personal collection of Mary Black, noted folk art scholar and curator; and by descent in her family. ERASTUS SALISBURY FIELD (MA/NY, 1805-1900) Pair of Portraits of a Well-to-Do Couple, oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1835, probably Boston. He in black coat and stock, with pleated shirt front and buff waistcoat; she with hair up in braids, brown silk dress with muttonchop sleeves, lace collar, embroidered grey shawl, open book in her right hand. In later gold leaf deep cove molded frames, OS: 40" x 32- 3/4", SS: 34- 1/4" x 27". Cleaned and relined.

ERASTUS SALISBURY FIELD (MA/NY, 1805-1900) "Portrait of Phineas Field, Painted by Erastus Salisbury Field, his brother. Done 1831", oil on canvas, inscribed verso, but covered by relining. He is depicted writing in a book. Labels verso from Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Mass. for 1940 exhibition, catalog no 8. Lent by Mrs. Douglas M. Bowen. In gold and black frame, OS: 32" x 26- 1/2", SS: 28- 1/2" x 23", cleaned and relined. LITERATURE: Pictured Erastus Salisbury Field, 1805-1900, by Mary Black, 1984, pg. 63. Mary Black, Curator Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Art Center, Williamsburg 1961-1964; Director Museum of American Folk Art 1964-1969; Curator NYHS 1969-1982. Black wrote extensively about this painting; "A portrait of the artist''s younger brother, Phineas, is representative of Field''s work in this period…1830, the year that Phineas came of age, and in one of his best portrayals, the artist marked the event with a fine, sure painting (pl. 3). The odd proportions are present, and so is the red chair. Phineas has a broken nose; his full lipped mouth is set in a pout; his coarse black hair is painted almost as a design in black folds. Fields use of both bright and somber colors and his sense of design result in a work that is surprisingly modern." (pg. 15). Two oils on canvas depicting a man and a woman in three quarter length view. The young gentleman sports a cropped beard and is seated in a chair wearing a black suit with bowtie and ruffled shirt, the woman has pincurls framing her face and is seated wearing a maroon velvet dress with a lace collar and gold tone brooch. Each canvas is trompe l'oeil painted with a giltwood frame motif and housed in a simple curly maple frame. SIZE: 40" x 33-3/4". Overall: 45-1/2" x 40". CONDITION: Both have restoration and significant craquelure. 51340-1
