ARTIST: Steve Ferguson (American, born 1946) TITLE: Plane - Beech Staggerwing MEDIUM: gouache on board CONDITION: Very good. ART SIZE: 17 x 14 inches / 43 x 35 cm BOARD SIZE: 20 x 15 inches / 50 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower left PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Staggerwing Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997. The Beech Model 17 was called the Staggerwing because the enclosed-cabin biplane's lower wing was set well in front of the upper wing. It achieved national notice in 1936, when Louise Thaden became the first woman to win America's prestigious coast-to-coast trophy race. Women, in fact, took three of the first five places -- with Laura Ingalls placing second and Amelia Earhart fifth. Thaden's victory was all the more special, considering she flew the Staggerwing biplane instead of one of the sleek monoplanes favored by most of the other contestants. With co-pilot Blanche Noyes, Thaden flew from New York to Los Angeles in a stunning 14 hours and 55 minutes, setting a new mark for women pilots. In 1928, Jack Northrup left his job with Lockheed and started his own airplane company. Northrup's first plane appeared in 1930, a speedy, six-passenger, cabin monoplane called the Alpha. Designed to be used as a mail and passenger carrier for TWA, the streamlined, low-winged, single-engine plane was made entirely of metal -- unusual for the time. SIGHT SIZE: 16 x 14 inches / 40 x 35 cm BOARD SIZE: 20 x 15 inches / 50 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Junkers F-13 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. Hugo Junkers was a wealthy industrialist, but was also a visionary who saw that all-metal aircraft were essential for aviation. He built the first all-metal, multi-seat transport used in airline service, the Junkers F 13, which first flew on June 25, 1919. The F 13 was an immediate success, for it was fast for the time, rugged, and adaptable for use in all climates. A low-wing monoplane, the F 13 still had an open cockpit for its two pilots, but seated four passengers in relative comfort in the cabin. The F 13 was built until 1932, being produced in 60 versions. The basic design was continuously improved over time with larger engines and more advanced equipment. German firms purchased about 110 of the F 13s and the aircraft was used in at least 24 countries. ART SIZE: 16 x 14 inches / 40 x 35 cm BOARD SIZE: 20 x 15 inches / 50 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Powered Flight Commemorative Cover for "Centennial of Aviation" issued 2003. Oleg Antonov's design bureau became a fertile source for Soviet air transports. The An-225 is built on the solid basis of the huge Antonov An-125, a four engine jet giant that weighs more than 800,000 pounds on take-off. But the Soviet space shuttle program required an even larger aircraft to carry the Buran shuttle orbiter, much as a modified Boeing 747 is used to carry the American space shuttle. Antonov met the challenge with the An-225, which has six huge Lotarev D-18T turbofans boasting 51,590 pounds of thrust each. The aircraft, which spans 290 feet, has a maximum gross take-off weight of more than 1,300,000 pounds. Despite its huge size, the An-225 is capable of a top speed of 540 mph, although it cruises at about 480. Covered with stressed-skin duralumin, the Alpha sported one of the strongest and most resilient wings in all of aviation. The unique wing was designed with internal multicellular construction, consisting of aluminum spars and ribs that formed a series of small, rigid compartments or cells -- much like those of a honeycomb. Lockheed won the right to produce prototypes for a transport capable of carrying up to 30,000 lbs of cargo, operating on short or make-shift runways and capable of making paradrops and assault landings. Mass production of the Hercules commenced in Marietta, Georgia. In service by the end of 1956, the turboprop aircraft was utilized heavily in Vietnam as a transport, airborne command post and gunship. ARTIST: Steve Ferguson (American, born 1946) TITLE: Plane - North American B-45 Tornado (titled on label) YEAR: 1991 MEDIUM: mixed media on board CONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light. ART SIZE: 17 x 14 inches / 43 x 35 cm FRAME SIZE: 20 x 15 inches / 50 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued March 17, 1992. In 1944 American military planners realized that control of the skies truly lay with jet power -- for bombers as well as fighters. A year later Douglas, Boeing, Consolidated, Martin and North American submitted proposals for jet bombers to the Army Air Force. North American's XB-45 prototype made its first flight in 1947, and the aircraft was such a hit that the Air Force initially ordered 96 "A" models, christened Tornados. The Tornado was the U.S. armed forces' first four-engined jet bomber. During the first tension-filled years after World War II, B-45s of the 47th Bomb Wing based at Sculthorpe, England, served as NATO's primary European based nuclear deterrent strike force. But the Tornado never fired a shot in anger, and the formidable aircraft passed into aviation history by the end of the 1950s. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Steve Ferguson (B. 1946) N. American B-45 Tornado

    Est: $100 - $1,000

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "North American B-45 Tornado Airplane" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13547)

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Lockheed C-130A Hercules" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c C-130 Hercules stamp. During the opening months of the Korean war, it became obvious to Air Force planners that the Fairchild C-119 lacked the power and performance necessary to meet massive cargo and troop transport needs. The hefty Hercules continues to support a variety of missions and served with distinction as both a transport and gunship in the Persian Gulf War. Image Size: 17 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Steve Ferguson (B. 1946) "Martin MB Series"

    Est: $100 - $1,000

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Martin MB Series Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued August 15, 1994. The MB-1 was designed in 1918 as a multipurpose bomber with long-range observation capabilities. Yet it was so versatile that the post office purchased several for use in its fledgling airmail service. An evolution of the MB-1, the MB-2 was the only production bomber ever specifically designated as a night bomber by the U.S. Army. The MB-2s were similar to the MB-1 but featured larger wings and other modifications to permit carrying heavier bomb loads. The MB-2 was America's primary bomber following World War I, a period that saw no combat operations. They nevertheless proved the effectiveness of bombers against warships when General Billy Mitchell used them to destroy the decommissioned World War I German battleship Ostfriesland in a demonstration raid off the coast of Virginia in 1921. Est: $475 - $625

ARTIST: Steve Ferguson (American, born 1946) TITLE: Plane - Alpha YEAR: 1997 MEDIUM: oil on board CONDITION: Excellent. No visible inpaint under UV light. ART SIZE: 17 x 14 inches / 43 x 35 cm BOARD SIZE: 20 x 15 inches / 50 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Alpha Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997.
