A beautiful hula dancer stands larger than life on one of the Hawaiian islands, surrounded by tropical fish and plants, Hawaiian men and women on surfboards and outriggers, and a United Boeing Stratocruiser flies overhead. 39 x 23 ¾”. Linen backed. Expertly repaired tears at upper right and top right corner. B+. Feher was born in Hungary and trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He emigrated to the United States after World War I, settling in Chicago and continuing his schooling at the Art Institute of Chicago. He designed a number of posters for United Airlines and Dole Pineapples. Feher was invited to Hawaii by United in 1946 on the company’s inaugural trip. Feher created 10 watercolors for United on that trip which were published as Christmas gifts to the airline’s executives. During this trip, Feher visited the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and would later join the faculty after permanently moving to Hawaii.

Hungarian-born Feher studied art in Budapest, Italy and Germany before coming to America in 1928, where he had a scholarship to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved to Hawaii in 1947 where he worked as a designer for the Bishop Museum and taught at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts. Coastal New England is one of America's proudest gems. Rocky coastlines from Maine to Connecticut are dotted with lighthouses, fishing villages, and dramatic shores. These beautiful features have long made it a tourist destination, as this 1950s United Air Lines poster shows. A classic fisherman takes center stage, his hand-cast net overflowing with fresh fish. United's latest model Douglas DC-6 soars east in the background. Joseph Feher (1908-1987) was a Hungarian born watercolorist who immigrated to Chicago during the post-WWI years. There he studied illustration at the Chicago Art Institute. He first visited Hawaii in 1934, where he fell in love with the community, culture, and natural beauty of the islands. He moved there permanently in 1947, and he continued his successful illustration career alongside teaching for 40 years. He created many posters for United Air Lines, as well as Hawaiian tourism maps and posters for the Dole Pineapple Company. United Airlines, Inc., commonly referred to as United, is a major U.S. airline headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It is the world's third-largest airline when measured by revenue, after American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. United operates a large domestic and international route network, with an extensive presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Honolulu und San-Francisco, Hawaiian Pineapple Company Limited, 1950. -- Die Karte basiert auf einer Zeichnung Joseph Fehers (1908-1987). Der in Ungarn geborene Künstler interessierte sich sehr für andere Kulturen und Traditionen, insbesondere für die hawaiianische. Er war leitender Kurator der 'Honolulu Academy of Arts' und publizierte den enzyklopädischen Band "Hawaii: A Pictorial History". In den Jahren 1930 bis 1960 lebte er selbst auf Hawai und fertigte in dieser Zeit unzählige Zeichungen, Aquarelle und Skizzen an. -- Die Karte zeigt die zu Hawai gehörenden Inseln: Molokai, Kaiai, Niihau, Oahu, Lanai, Maui, Kahoolawe und Hawai selbst. Jede Insel wurde gestaltet und zeigt sowohl die Geschichte sowie kleine Darstellungen zur Kultur, dem Alltagsleben, den Traditionen, der Landwirtschaft, Unterhaltung sowie der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Am rechten Bildrand befindet sich eine Legende sowie oberhalb eine verkleinerte und schematisierte Hauptkarte. – Im linken Bildrand mit Einriss bis in die Darstellung, dieser unfachmännisch hinterlegt, ebenso im rechten Bildrand mit kleineren Einrissen (davon einer hinterlegt), hier auch mit Quetschfalten. A Boeing 377 Stratocruiser flies over one of the Hawaiian islands (the topography suggests Maui), over scenes of surfers, tropical fish, native life, vacationers and exotic flora and fauna. Hungarian-born Feher studied art in Budapest, Italy and Germany before coming to America in 1928, where he had a scholarship to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved to Hawaii in 1947, worked as a designer for the Bishop Museum and taught at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts. One of his largest commissions was with United Airlines, for whom he designed about a dozen posters featuring different destinations; that two of them were for Hawaii is indicative of the passion he had for his adopted state, a sentiment further enforced by the fact that he also designed a new Hawaiian state seal and a statehood commemorative stamp.
